It just occurred to me that I may not have asked here.
Does anyone have an issue with birds not bonding? The Muscovy hen bonded with one male (out of four!), and he wasn’t even the dominant drake. She is now the only Muscovy. The Pekin drake mates her. She eats and drinks with them. She usually sleeps with them, and on a rare occasion she is actually in the pool with a Pekin. I’ve never seen anyone push her away. It’s been just shy of two years since getting rid of the other Muscovies. Why is she not bonded to them?

She was in the pool when it was still shallow, and the Pekin were just drinking. She got out before they even got in.

Such a beautiful day today! The baby chicks (4-5 weeks old) got to venture outside for the first time and see some of our old hens. I didn't get to snap any pictures while I was making sure nobody got killed lol! I hope the weather warms up soon, so that they can go outside for longer periods.

So I'm curious - what would I get if I crossed my Barred Rock rooster with A) golden laced wyandotte, B) Australorp, C)Buff Orpington?

I just cannot wait to have more chickens even though I'm well over my limit

Having a "chicken work day" at the farm tomorrow. 2 or 3 families with kids and a couple of adult to help me get the heated waterers replaced and cleaned and the hoop houses setup with some of the breeders.

Sounds great! It will be another beautiful and strangely warm day tomorrow.

One of the older CCL chicks I got from you seems to be not doing well. Seems like cocci, and I have treated their water for a few days. I haven’t seen a difference yet. Is there anything else to look for? She seems to weigh less than the other one too. I did see her poop, so I know digestion is okay too.

Anyone is welcome to chime in!

Also, I did euthanize the sickly chick today. It had an oozing eye, a cross beak, and was starting to breathe through her mouth. Her growth was also stunted. I felt bad about doing it, but I think she would have had a poor quality of life.

I'm sorry you had to put her down, it's always such a hard thing to do :( The other one, if keep treating for cocci. Maybe give her an eye dropper full of the medicated water a few times a day to make sure she's drinking enough of it. Sometimes when they're sick like that, they just won't drink enough of it to help.

:hugs
I'm sorry you had to do that, but it was the most merciful thing for you to do from what you described....doesn't mean it sucks any less though. :hmm

Are you selling eggs? Can you sell any hatching eggs?

Anyone got any Ameraucana eggs right now? I'm up for a little drive, located an hour from Erie. I have a real committed broody.

Or interesting call ducks or small breed geese?

Thanks all!

I try to sell eating eggs when I can but the problem is is that the girls are on strike! Yesterday I only got one blasted egg out of them. I do have some Ameraucana hatching eggs that Dennis gave me and Susan this week but I have to check with her to see what she wants to do first before I try and do anything with them since we were planning on hatching them out.

It kinda sucks that I only have one group of laying hens right now and they're just not working out as well as I'd hoped. I love my wyandotte girls but they're almost a year old and they've pretty much said "Screw you!" on eggs. Not to mention my roo isn't exactly the greatest. I know he's jumping the girls but I had 9 eggs in the incubator and all of them were clears!! :rant UGH! I just really want to get everything running smoothly and figured out.

Now if only my blasted Gander would mount his girlfriend....

That's strange your girls are still on strike. How many hens do you have? I have 11 and they laid about 3 eggs a day through winter, but then I finally got 9 from them yesterday. They lay a whole lot more when it's warmer. I sell eggs for $2 a dozen and that makes up for the cost in feed.

But in order to have more money, you're better off not having any chickens at all!
