Ana is at it again! She brought her two little cockerels out today for the first time. I cringe though every time she does that without me there to help. It's about a 4 ft drop out the side door of the coop!

My one hander seems to have taken offense to her though. I don't know if it's because she's been in the nest for a few weeks and he's rarely seen her or if it's something to do with the babies. He charged her earlier but didn't get her [/QUOTE

How cute! It's always an adventure isn't it?

Last night when I got home about 9:00 pm to do my flock check, I was missing a rooster and a turkey! He has only slept outside the coop once before, and I couldn't find him. This morning, he showed up. Who knows where he was or what he was doing!

And thankfully I found the turkey sitting on her pile of eggs on the woods and put her in the coop.

edited to fix spacing...

And also, two of the broodys chicks were missing! They must have been snuggling under one of the other broodys, they came out this morning, right as rain. This broody is the worst though. I won't let her have any more chicks.

Seems like the boys do get weird sometimes with the broodies the first time out after hatch. I think they are trying to assert their dominance and get miffed when broodies don't bow to them...their egos get a bit dented. Our roosters usually chill out after the first huff and puff though, then act like them raising kids was all their idea as the grand poo-baah rooster, lol.
I have never had ganders though around broodies, so not sure how they act towards chicks.

I've never had an issue with a roo when a broody has come out to the flock but this is the first time that the geese are adults and around a mom and babies. I know that when they're mated, they take an active role in raising goslings but I'm not sure how to take this. So far she's fine out there on her own. It's possible that they chased her because I was close to her (taking pictures) and since she hasn't been around in a while they wanted to chase her off. They are my bodyguards lol

@AnneInTheBurbs I'm glad you found everyone that vanished on you!
There's nothing worse than a bad broody that insists on being broody

This year is already the craziest broody year for me yet and it still hasn't even really warmed up yet! There's Ana, which is no surprise, but then there's Ebony, the muscovy duck, then in the turkey pen, Pebbles, Mary, and Cuddles. Cuddles has never even thought about going broody before and has parked her butt. I have no clue how I'm going to fill my orders for turkey eggs!

Your little Biele girls are doing so well! They fit right in with the chicks I had and seem to be enjoying the freedom to run around. Do you still have the info from the gentleman that sold them to you? I’m curious about his success rates with them.

Unfortunately I don't. I do believe his name was Steve though. Sorry I know that's not much help.

In better news however!!!! I have a fertile Duck Egg in the brooder!!! I just...forgot when I set it. So here goes nothing trying to figure out when the heck I put it in there... :/

Haha, me too. I have the current idiot broody, two broody turkeys, and another that just went broody on me. The only ones that will get any babies will be the turkeys when (hopefully) the eggs hatch out of the incubator.

I have a mixture of Poly-vi-sol (without iron), vitamin E, and selenium for my chick with wry neck. I have been holding her and dipping her beak in it to help her drink. I wasn't sure if she was able to drink it so I dipped some bread in there and fed it to her. She is constantly looking down, and has been shaking her head and tripping over herself. I let her out about 3 times a day to get away from the others to eat under my supervision. When she has one of those shaking fits, I have to grab her and correct her neck. Is there any chance of her surviving this? How long do I give her? I have never had to cull a chick :hit

We neck is tough. Sometimes they recover with treatment, sometimes they don't :( I'd give her at least a week of treatment and see where she's at by that point.

Brought some ducklings to work to meet a customer. They were a hit with all my coworkers, especially one lady.
