It may be available in stores, but not at the same quality level!

Congrats on your first successful butcher day! Now you will be better prepared to take care of all the extra cockerels your broodies will hatch.

You aren’t kidding! I just had my first serving today, and boy was it tasty! It really had a lot more flavor, and I didn’t do anything too different for them.

This was actually our second butchering day, but last year’s harvest was not as tender or tasty. The other day, when I butchered the first one, was my first that I have done by myself.

Hi all!! I had my first hatch in an incubator a few weeks ago. I got these crazy birds from it.View attachment 1400613 View attachment 1400615 View attachment 1400616 have no idea what mixes they are. Hoping the one with gold is a girl. Pretty sure other one is a rooster.

How cute! Crests and feathered feet. I bet they will be gorgeous girls.

Tasty! And I think the meat was darker, which means more B12 and iron.

I accept PayPal. My LF saddles have fit some pretty large girls. I haven't found aa hen that they didn't for yet :) If you want, you can measure from between the tops of her wings to the base of her tail.

Thanks, I'll measure today and let you know!

anyone having problems with coons? i lost all but two of my 12 or 15 chickens over the winter while gone(grand-daughter taking care of them) and we just got back from the dr's and my husband came in from getting mail and said theres a big coon walking in the yard, well don't know if it was sick or not but its no longer walking, just hoping if it was sick that it didn't have fleas, dogs have their shots but not sure if our house pig has a rabies shot when he got his other shots

We have coons and possums that come to our house for food. They're the sweetest ever.
We also have foxes and coyotes and hawks that I'm not as fond of but so far all I have to do is scare them away and we haven't had a predator kill a chicken yet.

What do you guys do about dirty bottoms?

I give them a bath but sometimes their butts are just so poofy that they can't help but poop on their feathers. In that case, I cut the feathers back a couple inches.

well, my husband usually gets rid of them cause of all the chicken kills here, i've lost quite a few chickens thru the years, the way i feel, if you want to live, stay away from my place

One of my red sexlinks is acting weird. When I went out this evening she didn’t join the others for meal worms. I went to check on her and she ran away. But still didn’t eat. She then went to the water. Eventually she drank some. Then she was doing this weird movement with her neck. I did check and she did get into the coop. What could be wrong with her?

if she was a dog or cat i would say watch her for rabies. animals want water but are afraid to go near it, hope you find out what it is and its something simple like going broody

So my turkey seems to sitting on her nest overnight every other night. Arg! :idunno I cannot find out where she is nesting. This morning, I woke up again at 5:30 to see if I could see where she comes in from. I waited an hour, and figured she had gotten nabbed. But a little while later, I see her cruising around with the crew. I think I might get one of those tiny gps trackers to put around her neck so I can find her. Haha! So glad she’s back, but I hate thinking that something could grab her.

I don't eat chicken, but I wish I could buy some for my family from someone here! Sometimes the supermarket stuff smells like bleach and factory farmed birds don't have very happy lives.
Remember when you came over to pick up your Splash Orp and I couldn’t sex them for sure at that time?...6 of the 8 I have left are cockerels. Please PLEASE tell me the one you left with is not all comb and wattles... I am scheduling the 6. cockerels for processing shortly. I don’t do it myself, but the place where I go is clean, quick and humane.
