Are possums a danger to chickens? I know they are beneficial to the ecosystem and I don't even think they are that ugly (well, a little ugly), but they do not belong in my yard! Fenris alerted to one, I think he'd have tried to maybe kill it himself. Got it to play dead until husband could make it true. Big thing - about 15 to 20 lbs.
some people don't believe that they are but i've caught them in the barn, in the pen with a couple of dead, and parts eaten, chicken . i believe if a possum or coon wants to live, stay off my property, husband is a mighty hunter:lau:gig and i also can take care of them

I had to butcher a hen over the weekend. Some how she cut her bottom beak off. I need to go around the pen a check for sharp things.
:(

Glad hubby took care of things for ya;)

They can and will eat chickens, they may not target large adults very often but certainly won't pass an easy meal and smaller ones are especially vulnerable. They will go after eggs also, and that makes broodies more vulnerable. My biggest concern about them though is disease... they carry bugs and potentially rabies.... neither of which I want anywhere near the yard so possums are not welcome at all around here. Any found in the yard area are dealt with immediately and permanently.
I also feel that our location allows for ample food and shelter for wild critters in the woods behind our place. They should be content to remain there, in fact it can easily support them and they have to venture across open area to get to my place. If they are seeking something from our yard it is really out of the ordinary and makes me suspicious of the animals health to begin with.
