Argh, it’s too bad you’re so far away @CuteFluffyButtSilkies! I’ve decided to get a few Silkie girls. Finally. I want to develop small (1-meal) tasty little meat chickens for urban farming by crossing Silkies with Marans. Eventually might add some Rock or RIR, but want to keep them small, plump, and fast breeding. That’s Silkie all the way! And this project is alongside my PennyRed project, crossing JG with Marans, Brahma, and RIR for a giant backyard dualie. I know. I’m nuts. I feel like Dr. Frankenstein! “Igor, bring me...the incubator! Mwahahaha!”🙃

Would love to see your finished project

Another option for small round broodies would be Cochin, they have banty and large fowl varieties and both tend to be broody. We have a 'tractor supply banty bin' Cochin hen (Janeway) who is going strong at 8 years old and has raised a ton of chicks over the years.
If you are aiming for some meatiness I would check them out as an alternative, Janeway is much more rounded and chesty than most of the silkies I have handled.

I have several Cochins, standards, though no bantams. I adore them, but have had no success with them as broody moms yet. They are workhorse egg layers though! They are broad-breasted, but I don’t know how meaty they are. They will probably end up in the mix. I’m thinking Silkie primarily for their breeding proclivities, the point is to make tasty little tenders that breed like Tribbles.😂
