Argh, it’s too bad you’re so far away @CuteFluffyButtSilkies! I’ve decided to get a few Silkie girls. Finally. I want to develop small (1-meal) tasty little meat chickens for urban farming by crossing Silkies with Marans. Eventually might add some Rock or RIR, but want to keep them small, plump, and fast breeding. That’s Silkie all the way! And this project is alongside my PennyRed project, crossing JG with Marans, Brahma, and RIR for a giant backyard dualie. I know. I’m nuts. I feel like Dr. Frankenstein! “Igor, bring me...the incubator! Mwahahaha!”![]()
Another option for small round broodies would be Cochin, they have banty and large fowl varieties and both tend to be broody. We have a 'tractor supply banty bin' Cochin hen (Janeway) who is going strong at 8 years old and has raised a ton of chicks over the years.Argh, it’s too bad you’re so far away @CuteFluffyButtSilkies!
