UGH! It’s SOOOO hard to know when help is needed.... I try to stay ‘hands off’ BUT the overwhelming guilt of finding a dead fully formed chick that pipped....but didn’t make it further prompts me to help....often. I’ve never done quail before. So glad that Duckling was excited about the hatch. My grands don’t live with me anymore, and....I’m not gonna lie, there is a little magic lost when there are no children fascinated by the chicks.

Soooo.... as long as I’m taking over the thread.... I got a story for ya’ll. I have been an Uber Driver for the last 2 years...haven’t been driving for the last month or so as I have a daughter with an autoimmune disease that is high risk. BUT..... back in August, I was driving to a ‘pick up’ and saw what a thought was a softball in the road. I swerved around it and realized it had eyes....Was this a kitten? I backed up, and indeed...it was a kitten, a very sick, scrawny kitten. It was curled in a ball...didn’t run and when I picked it up. I felt all of it’s bones jutting out and saw that one eyeball was burst and hanging out. I assumed it had been run over by a car and so I put it on my lap and drove to my passenger.... who completely FREAKED OUT. She did NOT want to get in the car, kept screaming.... ‘OMG OMG! LOOK at it’s EYE!’ I’m like... ‘this thing is bout 1/2 dead....it can’t hurt you’. So I wrapped it up in an extra t-shirt I had and placed her on the passenger seat next to me, out of eyesight of my passenger (sitting in the back).

I finished the trip and my plan was to take the kitten to the SPCA or a vet to have it put down humanely. No one was open. My own small animal vet fit me into their schedule but it wouldn’t be for a 3 hours. Sooooo.... I kept picking up fares, checking to make sure she was still breathing every now and again. When I got to the vet, he says, ‘Martha, she hasn’t been hit by a car, she is immaciated from mal nutrition. Her eye has an infection which made it burst and will need to be removed. But not until she is well enough, she is currently at death’s door’. Being my vet for the last 30 years, he knows that we do NOT do cats. My 16 and 20 year old are both allergic and I am not in the market for a kitten. He says...’we’ll test her for Feline Luekemia and AIDS...if she has either, we’ll put her down’. She did NOT.

He says, ‘can you take this on right now’..... I hesitated, I thought, and then said.... ’No. Too much going on, financial problems, sick kids, health issues. I need another animal, like a need a hole in the head. Plus.... you KNOW both Matthew n Joni are allergic to cats’. To this.... his assistant sighed. I felt bad, but also felt like, I need to say NO for a change. They called 3 animal shelters....NONE had room for a kitten. My vet.... opened a can of wet food and plopped some on the exam table.....she was ALL over it. And then....I knew. She has such a desire to live, she deserves to live. Okay.... I’ll take her home, get her well and look for a home for her.

She spent the next week, eating, sleeping, taking meds, and hanging out on my lap. I put some feelers out on FB to see if we could find a home, but I was smitten. People came forward who wanted her, but there was NO way I could part with her. The kids, swollen eyed, sneezing and a few hives....lived on Benedryl for a few weeks. I know....BAD Mom 😒. BUT..... Autumn is with us now....she is the apple of my eye and I’m so very glad I noticed her that day.

I am so glad you were the one who found her! You are not a bad mom and no one who understood your heart would EVER say that! Your kids will learn to deal with the allergies and I have had good luck in bathing cats which caused me to react.... a regular bath with good oatmeal shampoo will help minimize dander.
We had a very similar rescue years ago (right down to the bad eye), he pulled through, was named Rocco, after an Italian saint who took care of people afflicted with skin conditions and pestilence. Rocco was an incredible character, probably due to his unique start at life, and is still very sorely missed.
I believe Autumn will be a wonderful companion for you and you will be rewarded for your kindness with years of purring and lap time relaxation!

Not sure if these still need a home, but I am also in Chester County and would love to have them. How old are they?

Yes, I'm still trying to find them a home. I am so worried, I don't want to have to take them to the animal shelter and was worried about asking on FB or Craigslist that I would just get people looking for easy eggs who were not really chicken lovers. They are about 3 or 4 years old, and still laying. Here's a pic I got the other day as I was just letting them out for their daily wanderings.

Let me know if you'd still like them, and we can set up a time when I can bring them out to you!
