Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I used to have the flock in 3/4 of the building. Back then I had multiple coops going, and averaged sixty adults. I think that was the only time I had pullets begin over the winter, and eggs until it snowed. I have been torn between adding a mirror to reflect sunlight, and just letting the cycle continue. Stop in late October, start the first week of March.

My Polish & Silkie girl from OneMountainAcres still lays about everyday. A welbar pulet lays every other day. All others stopped, including a 8 month legbar who never laid. Who would believe a Polish & Silkie mix being such a great layer?

Gotta love those polkies!! I plan on keeping at least 1 for myself next year. The one that we were going to keep was one that we lost to a raccoon over the summer :/ My daughter had her so sweet and affectionate too.

I am getting mostly eggs from Marans pullets now, and a sole olive egger left from last year lays every day or 2. I am ok with production dropping off this time of year, as I believe that heavy laying when it gets very cold is at least one cause of increased mortality. I often find some bodies a few days after a brief cold spell. Not sure why it does not happen during the intense cold (sometimes it does), but a day or 2 after it starts to warm up, but that seems to be a trend. Lost a hen this morning and yesterday was a definite warm up to today being very nice.

Last year, when it kept fluctuating warm and cold, I think I lost nine quail, maybe more. I put the rest in a pen in the main building. I moved the quail to a bigger pen, and added a lot of straw and leaves a few weeks ago hoping it was enough to help them through. So far so good. As far as the chickens, I lost a SPR pullet last week. It looked like she dropped dead from the roost.
Tell me again that teen boys are just hormonal, and get better. The cock is being a booger, and I am tempted to eat him on Thanksgiving!
Don’t worry, he’s not being rough, he’s just hogging the treats, and pushing the girls away. When he settles, he can have a name.

My welsummer mix olive egger and my legbar, hatched in April, never laid. I hope they will next spring. The legbar spends a lot of time in the nest box. I am not sure what she does in there -- perhaps she sits on the wooden eggs?

It's weird that she went broody before even laying eggs. I told my son about the story the longest living chicken never laid an egg in her life. Now he wants none of our chickens lays egg anymore! He talked to everyone of them to convince them that they shouldn't lay eggs. :idunno

Actually she must have been preparing to lay. I got my first small blue egg today!!

So my grow out pen for my Guinneas and Polish is turning out to be WAY more work than I had anticipated ~pretty much the same as Every Other animal enclosure that I have ever built... I did built a temporary run for them and am more than happy with my use of baling twine 😎. Not sure if you cans see it here.... but.....
