Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

OMG, forgot to tell you all... I knew I was scheduled for surgery, so my last act of independence before surgery was to go to Kansas City to meet a farmer friend of mine for a new English Shepherd puppy. She used to have a farm in New York and was the breeder of my Mindy and Dillon. She moved to New Mexico about 5 years ago but we remained friends. She had a litter of pups with my girl and 3 other pups destined for the east coast . I agreed to be the transport person rather than have them all go by plane. I met her Monday night in KC to swap off the pups and she had brought along a group of bottle lambs that couldnt be left at the farm. OMG! cuteness! I got to help do their midnight bottle feeding, one little girl was only about 3 lbs and so, so, so adorable! I cuddled her under my jacket while she fed and then left her their when feeding a little boy who was happy to bounce around on the grass. Was a great pick me up before the long drive back to Erie Pa where I handed off the other pups to a New York dairy farmer who was the next leg of the pups journey east. 2 days, 2000 miles and 4 roudy pups... all worth it to get this girl home.
Kendra, the new addition...

Aww! So cute! She's got a lot to learn from Mindy :) Hopefully she picks up on that desire to love and care for chicks!

We can hope, but I think Mindy is a pretty rare dog. I am tickled she already walks through the chicken yard without bouncing at anyone. She's a very calm thinker so far.

I got some help from the moms and chicks today. They got the leaves out of the mess of Yucca plants and morning glories.

I love watching the broodies with their babies, they are great at clearing out leaves, unfortunately they are also experts at tearing apart leaf piles us silly humans are trying to actually rake up! :barnie

:gig After the birds flattened the first compost pile, I had raked up another, and added to it. Moms and babies flattened that one too.

Congratulations!! And you hope to breed her? That’s exciting :celebrate How are you feeling? Are you getting around okay?
Getting around slowly and awkward, thankfully I have a single story house and camp. Using a "rollator" walker or crutches depending on situation, spending most of my time on recliner with foot elevated. A lot of people go through a lot worse every day and this is temporary so I can't really complain.
We may breed Kendra if hips test good and her work ethic and biddability remain good. To be true to the breed you have to be careful to only breed on the right traits. Tish really liked this little girl and already has ideas on some good males on the east coast that may match well for her. It will be a long 19 months of hoping, lol.

How old do chicks have to be before you can use permethrin on them? I just discovered straw lice nits on one of my roosters, and he’s been spending a lot if time in the chick pen with the 6-week-olds. He’s a low rank BC Marans that gets beaten up often, but surprisingly he is a wonderful guardian of the youngsters, patient, gentle, and alert for danger! I hope he hasn’t dropped too many lice all over the place!:sick
Pic is funny, I know, he pulled out his tail feathers to tell the “big guys” he’s not much interested in breeding, it’s not from the lice, he did that months ago.

To my knowledge there is no age limit. Untreated Lice would be more dangerous to them than exposure to the powder.
I have often treated broodies with babies. It seems broodies are very susceptible to parasites since they don't spend as much time grooming. Its not that they don't dust bath at all, but not near as much as normal laying birds.

@fisherlady Thank you. I’ll get some dust for the little ones, I usually use the liquid to make a dip for the adults, that’s what I’ll do for Tiger and any others showing visible nits. Then I’ll either dust or spray the coops. We seem to get straw lice about twice a year in blooms, and I’ve never managed to eradicate them completely. Very glad they don’t stay on me! Lice totally skeez me out.:sick

Good morning, peeps!
It just seemed like this was going to be the morning that one of the chicks decided that I was a good roost. Sure enough, I was staring off into space, and a white thing settled on my chest. It just had to be a LH.
I noticed that my two grey chicks are different breeds. The male has pinkish legs, and the other has yellow. He also has a black tail growing in. The red/brown pullets I knew were different. One is still looking like a RSL, but the other is looking like an actual breed. I just don’t know what.
