Momma muscovy hatched about 15 ducklings last Wednesday/Thursday. She seems to be taking care of them quite well. I have a quart chick waterer in there, which they drain at least twice a day. what kind of waterer works for a mother duck with ducklings? A standard rubber water pan or dog food dish has sides that are too high for the ducklings to drink unless they climb in, which I don't want them to do yet.

Oh, and 2 of the remaining 3 muscovy hens are co-broodies in the special, large nest I made for them. I think they only have about 10 eggs between them, but have opted to not disturb them to count.

I made a couple water jugs for ducks that worked great and they didn't waste it. I'm at work so I can't get a picture but basically, you use a milk jug or similar, cut a hole in the side just below or right about at head hight for the ducklings (mom will need a bigger one) so that they can get their heads in and drink but not climb in. Fill water up to the hole. You have to make another one with a hole higher up as they grow.

Something like this could work or else you could dig a hole the size of the rubber tub and set it down into the dirt.

@OneMountainAcres - I believe I will be making a trip for a family reunion to your area on August 20. If you (or anyone else in the Everett/Bedford area) want me to bring chicks, let me know.
@TillyPeeps - There are only 3 sexlinked Ameraucana eggs due to hatch before then, so while a female is possible, it is a long shot. It is more likely that I will have your chicks from the 8/21 hatch.

I'll have to wait until closer to see if I will be working or if I would be able to meet you at all but I wouldn't mind a couple of the genetic hackles. They're beautiful birds! Maybe a couple legbars possibly. You don't happen to still have the silkie feathered gene in your ameraucanas at all do you? I still have one silkie feathered hen and one that I believe is split but no roos left.

If I will go to get my chicks, I should be able to hold the chicks for you if you cannot meet Dennis that day. Hubby goes to Altoona everyday, so you can meet him to pick up the chicks when you have time. You may need to meet him early on morning though, he is nervous about taking care of chicks.

Thank you. I remember what's going on August 20th now. My son has checkups for the Johnstown Symphony Youth Orchestra. It's basically their first get together to make sure they've been playing and practicing the music. Normally, he would drive himself but he's in a boot for a sprained ankle until August 22nd and can't drive with it on. I may be able to get DH to take him there though so I can go meet up. I'll have to wait until it's closer to time and make sure I don't have to work either lol.

I have a couple of waters like troyer posted that I place near any of my newly hatched birds, but one of my muskovies took her ducklings to a nipple water for their first drink. I am pleasantly surprised at how well nipple waters work for ducks of all ages My ducks have access to the pond for head dunking during the day. 3 gallon buckets also work for head dunking.
