If anyone fly fishes, the very expensive feathers used for tying the flies come from specially bred chickens. This is an interesting article about how they were developed and what makes them special: https://troutatemyhomework.wordpress.com/2014/03/10/how-does-genetic-hackle-work/
Some of my roosters actually resemble the pictures in the article!
And I have lots of these growing out right now.
Very cool, Dennis, thanks for the info! I’m kind of wondering if any of your birds’ fly-tie DNA snuck into that bantam Silkie/Cochin group you gave me. The rooster especially is something special, and the one hen’s strange coloring (very like Mille Fleur) is a bit of a mystery. They are so fun, and never showed any weakness to whatever this respiratory infection in my flock is.🥰

@OneMountainAcres - I believe I will be making a trip for a family reunion to your area on August 20. If you (or anyone else in the Everett/Bedford area) want me to bring chicks, let me know.
@TillyPeeps - There are only 3 sexlinked Ameraucana eggs due to hatch before then, so while a female is possible, it is a long shot. It is more likely that I will have your chicks from the 8/21 hatch.
Thanks a lot, Dennis. If you happen to have one or two Ameraucana and one legbar (prefer Opal) female at that time, I will take them with any other one or two pullets. It would be great if they don't need to go through shipping stress. If no Ameraucana pullet, I can wait for the next hatch. We will see. :D

Well, the muscovy hen has some ducklings in her nestbox. Gonna have to move them all because I fear the guineas they are with will attack the ducklings. I don't trust guineas at all!

Goslings are growing fast. The 9 oldest ones are all females and are nearly full grown. I talk to them as I approach and they recognize my voice and call back as well as getting up to come over and "talk" to me.
I heard a lot of good things about goose. Too bad that I'm seriously allergy to them.

Hey yinz guys. I'm still alive. 2022 can bite me. Started out with my Big Guy not being able to walk without pain in his "good" knee. THEN, he got what he thinks was a really nasty chest cold. THAT turned into a flare up of his Congestive Heart Failure - 10 days in hospital in May. NOT fun. So, we get over that and plan, amidst all the dr visits, to go to FL for the twins' birthday. YAY ONE YEAR OLD. Ok, so that went ok. Best part of the year. But the last night we were there, I was miserable for about 6-8 hours, not really sure what, but I wrapped up in a blanket and slept in the chair. The next day, not too bad. Had bfast with the kids and drove home. Granddaughter was fussy with fever that night. Daughter next day tested pos for the plague. So we got test kits on the way home (2 day drive.) I was positive and he was pos the next day. Still have cough but pretty much over it. But 2022 can still bite me. Oh, and all the chicks I got from Calico died. One right after the other after I put them in the run. Not all at once, took almost 2 weeks. No looking ill. Bite me, 2022.

Sorry for the problems you have had. Hopefully, things will get better for you soon. :fl
