Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

finally got my chicks in the mail today! i got RIR NHR plymouth rock and EEs only problem is i cant tell which ones are which. there is also one peeping really loudly at times as ive never owned chicks before i cant seem to figure out whats wrong ive shown him the food and water and showed him the warm and cool section of the brooder, anyone have any suggestions im pretty open

Chicks usually cry when they're cold, are they huddled up on each other? When the get way too hot, they get lethargic, first they spread out to the sides of the brooder to avoid the heat. If it's not any of these things…I'm not sure.

Wish I had an answer. We had a LOUD chick this past spring, LOUD as in….keeping everyone awake at night. Our solution was to pop her under the broody hen. We lucked out, it worked. I've been using an Ecoglow as a warmer instead of the light, and it seems to keep them quiet. I think it's because it's dark at night and light in the day, so they're awake more when we are, instead of all the time on and off.

Well, I found a nice home for one of my Serama pairs. The lady is picking them up tomorrow. The kids weren't happy about it but I have too many roos. The one she wanted was the one I was contemplating keeping, he really is just a beautiful boy. The upside, she mentioned having 3 week old EE pullets and I offered her a 3 week old BLRW cockerel, and she's taking him. He's gonna be a beautiful boy too! So, I know they're going to good homes and I have a little more room for the upcoming newbies. Win/Win.
I told her about this thread, so maybe she'll be popping up on here.

How long will these classes last tomorrow....9 to ????

should I pack a lunch ???

what about dinner ???

pillow for my butt ??? don't want that swelling....

I went to TSC this past week, and resisted the chicks. It was hard. Especially when the guy kept putting them in my hands! Fortunately they were closing, and I didn't have time to change my mind. Next week may be different.
After a whole 10 months, and two weeks, guess what I did last night?! LAUNDRY!!!!! A guy came, and put the plumbing in (on my back porch. No steps to go up/down either!!) and I got another guy to trade me a new (to me) washer for my old appliances at my old house! He got the better end of the deal, but I got a bigger washer, and someone else to do the heavy lifting and hauling!!
To make things better, the guy that did the plumbing is offering me his peacocks (IDK if I want them yet), sold 14 dozen eggs for me (boy is my fridge empty now!) AND.... He knows a farmer that sells 100# bags of feed for about $20 in my area! I just loaded up Monday, but I will happily buy another 100# next week for that price! Now if I can figure out how to LIFT 100 lbs of feed! Any hints??

Yay on the new washer! As to the bags of feed...the mill loads them in my jeep. I then pull the kids sled up behind the jeep..kinda push it out the back of the jeep...tug it down to the coop. Lay the garbage can on it's side to slide the bag in it, and then stand the can up.

Saw this link about Cackleberry hatchery. I think this may be interesting. I am following the thread of what folks are getting....to sum it up, you give them $60.00(includes shipping) and they deliver 40+ birds(all types and they have a large selection)...some folks are getting turkeys and ducks in the mix...wonder what else may be included?

Also, (remember I'm a newbie) I had three of my two week old chicks perched on my arm today....both of the dorkings and one of the BOs....the only birds that are still skidish are the GLWs...also, they don't get bothered when my pup sits outside the crate and whines at them...I thought they'd be more standoffish. go figure.
