I have a5 gallon bucket of field corn, can I chop that up in a blender and give that to my chickens or does it have to come from a feed store?

No to the feed store. Yours is probably fresher and better. It may kill your blender, though.

help from those that ferment feed

This batch of 24 meat birds is actually hubbies project....he asked if i could mix up some ferment to try with them...

i have buckets and vinegar

do I completely cover it, doesn't it need to breath, if i leave the lid slightly off won't bugs get into it...
will a 5 gallon bucket be enough for 24 birds
how many times a day to feed them this

Told him I will mix it up in morning after work, will this be ready to start feeding by say friday...

I knew i would get sucked into dealing with these birds,,,,I kind of wanted some time off from dealing with multiple pens,,,,it be nice to only deal with the 1 pen of layers for awhile...

I cheat and it works WONDERFULLY! No straining either! I do the HOTWATER no STRAINING method and LOVE IT! It has never smelled so fermented before either! Call me to discuss, its easy and will save the mess and time! I am so glad I experimented with it, its even easier than it was!

So I'm going to be needing another bag of feed soon. My question this time is should I switch to medicated feed? I did not get it the first time around. If I do switch how long do I keep them on it? I guess a better question may be how much should I buy?

I never give medicated. I have turkeys, ducks, goslings & quail besides the chicks & some of those can't have the medicated feed. Everyone has a different opinion on it. How much feed you need to buy depends on how many birds you have & how old they are. Need more details to help calculate

Nothing has to come from the feed store. You can make your own chickens food entirely (I haven't tried it but have seen recipes).

It very likely WILL kill your blender. I would take a hammer to it & just crack it up a bit.

DETAILS PLEASE! We used hot water in ours all winter because they were in the basement & we couldn't get it to ferment any other way because it was too cold down there. But that means carrying buckets of water down instead of just running the hose through the door when we need it. JJ doesn't strain very well most of the time & I have birds getting caked in FF.

I only have 6 chicks almost three weeks old so I know I'll need at least 20 lbs. My amount question is more toward if I were to switch to medicated how much of that would I need. I wasn't sure of the duration needed on medicated.

That 1 I can't answer since I don't feed medicated but starter/grower gets fed until about 14-15 weeks. I'm thinking medicated is just starter & only goes to like maybe 4-5 weeks. Anyone who feeds medicated please correct this if it's wrong.

Thanks silkie. I never even knew there was medicated prior to joining BYC. So I simply purchased a 20 lb bag of starter/grower.
