Well wing drowning is not good at all, lol

and yes..... the lesson in humidity THROW THOSE NUMBERS AWAY! THEY MEAN NOTHING!

HUMIDITY is NO SET NUMBER!
ITS a tool to achieve the correct weight loss of each egg! You will need to use it to adjust humidity.
Everyone's room atmosphere is different, every bator is different, every EGG is different.
Shipped egg air cells are different as is each egg by its age and size of air cell when set.
Its a matter of taking into account all these issues, either weighing eggs or watching air cell growth or both!

and you know I will throw this out there AGAIN!

Hatching 101

HUMIDITY
The Air Bubble in the Egg
The average chicken egg has thousands of pores running through the shell allowing the embryo to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Water is also lost through these pores. Soon after an egg is laid, a small air bubble or “air cell” forms in the large end of the egg from this water loss. Humidity levels in the incubator determine moisture evaporation during the 21 days of incubation and hatching. The air cell is crucial for the chick to break out of the egg shell at the end of the incubation period. The chick can drown if the air cell is too small or the chick may be retarded in growth if the air cell is too large. This is why maintaining the proper humidity is crucial.
Slightly lower humidity levels are more likely to be less disastrous than slightly higher humidity levels.

There are quite a few opinions on Humidity. After reading and researching for hours and hours,
I ALWAYS use DRY INCUBATION METHODS!

HOWEVER, if you are high altitude you will NOT use these methods!
Please continue with the 50-55% humidity and then 72% lockdown humidity.
The higher the Alt the more humidity needed.

What Dry Incubation implies.
Humidity is NOT A SET NUMBER, you need it YES!
However, you use it to "adjust" egg weight loss during incubation. We candle on days 7,10,14,18 To WATCH WEIGHT LOSS IN EVERY EGG! An EGG MUST lose approximately 13-14% of its weight
during the incubation process. THIS IS YOUR GOAL!! You can monitor this by marking Air cells and also by weighing. Please refer to CANDLING section of this Article for more Air Cell info.

Size of air cell on day 7, 14, and 18 of incubation

I choose the easier method, keeping a close eye on air cell growth during incubation. You begin by ONLY adding a small amount of water and keep Humidity between 28%-45% and adjusting as you weigh or candle depending on moisture loss. So if your air cells look too large you must add humidity, too small lower it, and if your weighing you adjust as needed. UNTIL DAY 18 LOCKDOWN,
then stop turning and raise humidity to 65-70%

I have read and re-read this article numerous times!

And read this entire thread with over 300 posts of information

Humidity will naturally fluctuate in your incubator as it fluctuates widely with weather conditions.
If it is slightly lower or higher some days then don't worry about it. Do your best to keep the humidity level in the incubating room around 50%. You may actually need to dehumidify. By controlling the room humidity, you can be more accurate with humidity inside the incubator. Just remember high humidity is MUCH worse than low humidity as higher humidity hinders the evaporation inside of the egg. Each egg must lose approximately 13-14% of its weight
during the incubation process. You can monitor this by marking Air cells and also by weighing.
Please refer to CANDLING section of this Article for more Air Cell info.

NOTES: It’s a good idea to keep the incubator plugged into a surge protector. Use distilled water in your incubator to help prevent bacteria growth. Omphalitis, Mushy Chick Disease and Yolk Sack Infection may be caused by a bacterium that enters through the porous egg shell. Unfortunately, incubation conditions are ideal for breeding bacteria as well as incubating eggs. Brinsea sells a disinfectant, formulated to be used for cleaning eggs, incubators, safe and effective against yeasts, fungi, viruses and bacteria which can cause fatal damage to the growing embryo. Pennies can be added to water wells. Copper helps to destroy the cell walls of bacteria, thus keeping bacteria out of the incubator. Pennies before 1982 have more copper content and pure copper kills 99.9% of bacteria.

Sally, why do I scare you ?

Note to physco hormone overload roosters......looks will only get you so far,,,i will make stew out of you no matter how gorgeous you are.....

Note to broody's.....you can be stew also....

note to self.......check into installing roll out nesters, it might save a few fingers....

.... It's Christmas every 3-7 days here. Every time I have another hatch!

Speaking of. Didn't I just hatch over 50 chicks on Sun/Mon? I have another batch going into lock down tonight.

I am running out of room for these chicks. Didn't someone say they wanted to come help me build a new brooder? I can pay you in chicks! (I am enabling future enablers, btw).

McC - I've had times I've done everything right and had 0 hatch and times everything went wrong and had good hatches.
Whatever happens, its not your fault.

I've gotten to the point I * try* not to obsess and let nature do its thing. After watching a broody hatch, I realized everything doesn't have to be perfect and steady. It is amazing what those chicks can go through. Biggest issue is long, high temperature spikes. Other than that, Sally had done tons of research and has lots of experience, USSR her guides as a resource. And HAVE FUN! it is a learning experience and a great way to enjoy and expand your experiences.

Anybody want some chicks, LOL. ;) really don't have that many, just sounded good.

Hey Pennsylvania!

Hubs and I are considering buying a house in Glen Rock, PA. We're moving from just under the border in Maryland. I can't find any answers as to if I can keep my chickens in Glen Rock. We found a wonderful house that will sit on about a third of an acre, but it will be a deal breaker if I have to leave my girls behind. Does anyone know? Apparently the township office is only open for 3 hours today, from noon to 3. :(
Depends on what your zoning is. My friend lives almost in the city and she isn't "allowed" but the they said she could hold a meeting with her neigbors and get it approved. I beleive they are working on that. You could call them and ask if it's ok in the area you are looking at moving to. If you are out of the city limits, i would think it would be ok, but i'm not sure. (i grew up in glen rock, but not in the city limits) :) Good luck! and welcome!

Dang...what do you do with so many chicks!!

awwwww That is gorgeously AFREAKINGMAZING! I love your work woman! so awesome!
OMYGAWD woman! I thought it was a murder scene! What in the world you poor thing, no wonder you were fretting holy sheet! Can we have an update? awwwwww I never seen that happen unless the broody pecked at them! awwwwww I Congrats on the other!
HA!!! Carbs broody HA!!!

oh no! I hope so too!
Ray lives near Christmas Village and even out on the main road (rt 183) traffic pretty much stops during their open times, its ALWAYS been HORRIBLE, when Ilived in Bernville I had to go miles out of my way to get home to avoid sitting in traffic with idiots! lol

I hope your toes feel better! how do you drop skids on your feet woman>?
The duckling is STILL alive! I am totally surprised! It absorbed the massive vein across the middle of the egg and the yolk is alot smaller! Maybe tonight it will be good and ready. It still keeps trying to get out! The other one that piped in the middle.. I think it passed in the middle of the night :/ But I am unsure so I will let it hang out for a little to see if any movement happens. My 2 goose eggs are on their way to hatching!
