Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Awesome pic! I asked Nan Bradshaw about ventilation when she was giving her talk on animal husbandry, I've always been perplexed by the 'plenty of ventilation, but no drafts' rule. The statements seem to contradict each other.

She said that ideally, the air flow comes in the coop at floor level on one side, and exits through the other side at roof level, thereby clearing stagnant air. Position roosts out of the direct air flow to avoid drafts on the birds.

I don't know how much sense this makes, she had a diagram that was very helpful.

That does make sense blarney thanks. However I won't be able to leave the pop door open at night as silkie says since there are many predators in my area. I've never seen anyone with a low window though either.

Quote: My window is in the middle of an end wall above the pop door with ventilation at top along all of the front & half of the back. I open everything during the day (weather permitting) to air everything out & have been closing the window & pop door at night. Once weather begins staying warmer at night my window will stay open at night as well. Right now I close it because everyone in that coop is 7-12 weeks old. My layer coop doesn't even have doors on the coop's pop doors but that run is entirely enclosed with hardware cloth.

Today was cool. Went to Aprils to meet up with Rhea again and met Joan. I got rid of three hens, then came home with a hen and a roo, lol. Cleaned out the LG and made 5 more batches of soap. Felt like a busy day, but I guess I really didn't do much, lol. I guess having four kids between 2 and 5 overnight until lunch makes it feel like you've done so much more.

AUNT KAT.....

Age is like wine -
It gets better with time
And coincidentally -
It gets better with wine!
Enjoy your special day!

Happy Birthday, Aunt Kat!
I agree the right amount of alcohol is beneficial. Last year DH had me so drunk I wouldn't stop crying. He just kept giving me more alcohol.
I really hope this week is better. If I don't post Tuesday morning, someone please clean out a barn. I will be worse than Chad on E-bay. Birds, horses, cows, elephants ...

MC I thought of you today,,,,,when I went to stir the ff bucket it shot bubbles at me,,,,,,not sure if I was laughing at the bubbles or you....

first feeding of ff went well..

there's one of those round black rubber bowls under that pile of bids......I filled it with about 2 inches of ff,,,,,went back 15 minutes later and the bowl was empty,,,,,,,Think this went well.
LOL!
mentioned to father in law that I needed something to put the fermented feed in to feed them, cause the little bowl would not work well,,,,10 minutes later he handed me this....

I am so glad my inlaws do not get rid of anything,,,of course the piles show it, but now i appreciate it...
Use a plastic window box. A large rock on the bottom will keep it from tipping. Or you can rig something up with big PVC pipes.

yep they are metal. hubby is gonna cover them with,,,,,not sure what you would call it, he has rolls of rubber like mats, seems more like bendable plastic to me, but he says its rubber.
hosed them off and put on his shop table to be finished, hopefully i get them back in the next week.
That works too!

Pennsylvania is crazy like that. Bellefonte/Bellwood/Bellview, Winburne/Windbern(sp?). It is dizzying.

OK, so it's missy & fisherlady over toward Uniontown then. Let me know if anyone that's going wants anything held. I can check PM's from my cell but the threads are harder to get to. If anyone needs my cell # to find me just PM me.

Bear update: Apparently our friendly neighborhood bear has been causing trouble all over the mountain and was caught and relocated at some point this week.

Good news for me and my chickens. Hopefully he didn't leave any friends behind.

Can he adopt me? I'd love to have someone magically come up with stuff for my chickens.

Also helpful to have a handy DH!
' LMAO, this tickled my fancy...could be the 2:20 am....or the glass of wine.

This is why I love my pop door. Door 1 (outside) is hardware cloth with screening over it (to keep flies out), I lock this at night 99% of the time. Plenty of ventilation, but still secure. Door 2 (inside) is a solid door. I lock this when it's REALLY wet/cold.

Nope, I'm nowhere near Uniontown. I'm closer to Mt. Joy than Mt. Healthy. Actually drove past Wing tonight...well as past as Rte 30 is.

Glad he has found a new home...hopefully not near me!

Quote: That's ok. I never made it out the door anyway. JJ wanted to go out to eat last night instead of loading birds like I told him we needed to do 1st. Then he insisted I take a nap like he was doing before getting up to load birds. I knew better on both accounts. I never heard the alarm at 3am & by the time I woke up at 6:30am there was no way I was going to get 100 birds loaded & in the car plus make a 2 hour drive in less than 30 minutes. I wanted to BE there at 6:30am. I wouldn't have made it until closer to 11am. No point in making a 4 hour round trip for 3 hours or less of selling time. It would have cost me more than I made.
