Great Horned owls are huge, so glad to hear no one was injured! I do believe they are protected though.
I'll check for injuries this afternoon as soon as I get home, but everyone was moving around just fine last night! He flew off and landed on top of my pole barn for a bit, watching us. His talons made a horrible screeching noise on the tin roof!
I don't know what the regs are near you (or how close/picky your neighbors are) as far the gun being fired, but you could see about the non-lethal rounds. They sell them for home defense, but I use them on animals I don't want to kill like the owls when we had rabbits, or animals that are out of season (groundhogs, coyotes, coons and possoms aren't as lucky). If it's to defend your flock I think you'll be ok, but check to be sure.
Glad the wire held it back, and no one was hurt.
ETA: they are protected by fed and state laws, so check with the Game Commission about non lethal rounds or if this continues if they relocate problem birds. Although I don't know how much good relocation would be for a bird...

I don't want to kill an owl either, but I can't have him returning every night to get a shot at the ducks or bantams (both in an open run overnight. Not too worried about the bantams, they have 1/4 inch wire. The ducks just have standard chicken wire. I don't know if he could get through that!). Most of our neighbors also own firearms, but we're getting a new neighbor and I'm sure the exsisting ones won't appreciate gunshots at that hour. Would the game commision really relocate a problem bird? I have really fine plasticy deer netting covering the main runs, so I'm worried about him getting stuck in it one of these days. I wonder if they would come remove the bird if he got stuck...

Morning All!!
I have a quick question and thought I would ask your opinions before going to the "sick/hurt birds board"
My Fav hen seems to have a little bump at the base of her one toe. She is eatting and walking around on it just fine... I didn't notice it till this AM. Not sure if it is Bumble foot or not. I thought she would not put too much weight on it if it was. She was her bright normal talkitive self this am. Came running for her treats. She is still laying nice eggs as well.

So My question is... What do i do? It doesn't seem to be bothering her so i would HATE to open it up and cause more problems, but i don't want to let it go till it get's so bad that she can't walk and I HAVE to perform surgery..

I will try to get some picks of her foot tonight. It is about the size of a pencil eraser. You can't really tell unless you look closely.

Any Suggestions? Can i do something to avoid the surgery?

bumblefoot? best way is to get that splinter and infection out and cleared up, you need verterycin and a surgical blade, gloves and such. Epsom salt for soaking, its a real pain in the butt to care for the hen for a week or two, daily soakings and retaping. If you have antibiotic you can try it, with the warm weather coming up it will only get worse. Bumblefoot is staph infection so it is possible to spread infection through cuts and such. isolate her.

does anybody know if straw is ok for bedding for my egg layers?
I used it all winter and switched back to shavings, it tends to hold moisture for some reason, you can try it and see how you like it, cleanout is easier with straw as you can fork it out. But shavings, hands down seems dryer. That's what I experienced over the winter months, plus with shavings their tend to be less mold issues as some straw you buy can have mold and mold and chickens are bad. But again, straw has been used for decades right? (that wasn't much help! ha)
