and it is Mt Healthy hatchery.
Good moring everyone!!

So what are you looking at???

You didn't get her groomed very good, I have to do it again!!

They are so much easier to take care of when they are little!

I like the fluffy ones!

That's all so cute, wish my dogs were that good with my birds. Looks like someone has attitude!!!
Off to the ER this morning, lil one tumbled out of bed last night and didn't bother telling me until 10 mins ago that his shoulder was more sore today, upon looking at it he now has a little pokey out bit on his collar bone - wish me luck, I feel like the worst mother in the world

Ok, not going back to do quotes.

No, I wasn't out doing chicken stuff..that actually sounds fun compared to ripping up carpet that has been down for at least 30 years and had multiple spills on it. The carpet padding had disintegrated in some spots, and melted to the floor in others....there's a (large) hole in the floor that leads nowhere and simply had carpeting put over it. 1/2 the floor is obviously hardwood, and 1/2 the floor is just planks, there's a seam between them that is uneven. There are random staples all over the floor, some of which are so rusted that when I went to pull them, they disintegrated. So now I have little rusty pins in my floor...yeah it was a fun 24 hours.

Tonight DH and stepson were sitting out back...DH comes running in and wants me to come out (note, we had a power outage...so it's REALLY dark out there) he and stepson had heard and were still hearing yelps from a coyote....running along our property line!!! By the time I went out, it had crossed the road and was in the neihbor's back yard...still entirely too close with my chickens!
I had to do the carpet thing in my parents basement a few weeks ago, glad it had cement underneath and no wood. Right now we're helping my sis move into her new apartment, all I'll say is I am seriously considering a single floor home for the first time. I am crossing my fingers I don't hear any coyotes nearby anytime soon, and hopefully you don't get that "visitor" back anytime soon or ever.

It is good to know that there is white skin!!!  I have a shipment of 25 chicks coming from Paul Smith.  I am sure I will have an extra black cockerel!!!  They will be here in a week or so.  Then I will need another 8 weeks until I can sex them!!!

awesome heather. keep me posted. would drive to you for paul's lines.

Oh yeah! Chicken chores are WAY more fun than that. You're description makes me feel like I was there.

The ducklings are adorable...almost make me want more...specifically scovies.

So my duck is finally laying on a regular basis! YAY....but of course now I wonder if the 3 that I thought were also hens are drakes instead...grr...

And the sebrights are laying...anyone wanna incubate them? I would give it a try, as long as you take all the babies back : )

So I haven't been able to do much with my birds this weekend as we're moving my sis into her apartment. I'm not even remotely thrilled with the location or the apartment itself, it really needs some work, but I'm not living there so whatever. I think it's pretty funny that she's not working right now, so has no money for anything (our parents are paying for everything so far), but is planning on getting her CCL and apparently thinks she'll be able to find a reliable revolver super cheap or that someone will just "give" her one

(she thought I'd part with one of my guns, I think I laughed for 10 minutes straight.) I honestly think she'd be better off stocking up on hornet spray and then have a pepper spray for her keychain, that's what our Uncle (a cop) advises for people who cannot have a gun at work. Especially since her whole reason for moving is for school, and she would need to leave any guns at her apartment while at classes.

Of course Gavin and I need to go back up today and help paint, I want to know where the heck her 3 roommates are. I especially love that she's almost at the end of her first month on the lease and is just getting moved in

. Ok now that the rant is over....

Hopefully no one had issues with the frost that was hitting parts of the state.
Well time for me to get the animals breakfast and get Gavin up and moving. Hopefully everyone else has a good day.

After a broody hatches her chicks, how long do they stay in the nest? I have my broody in a small chicken tractor and the chicks would have to walk up a ramp to get inside. Didn't know if I need to change the ramp in some way for the chicks. I wanted to let mom raise the chicks but it is still kind of cold and don't want to loose any to the cold.

It is plenty warm enough, I have had them raise chicks in the winter time.....the ramp will be just fine as long as it is not to steep, just keep an eye on them the first couple times they are out......mom should bring them out within about 3 days depending on were you keep the food and water.

you will be surprised at how much more lively and healthy a chick is when broody raised.

When I was in NJ last weekend, my sister commented that they were trying to figure out where to put the gun safe. My brother asked if they really had enough guns for a gun safe. My reply was once you have 1 gun with kids in the house, you need a gun safe. He wanted to know why a trigger lock wouldn't work. My sister of course said they have plenty of guns to fill the gun safe, and what they don't currently have, her husband will inherit from his parents. My DH is sitting there laughing, as we have 2, and truly need a 3rd.

More lively?? Goodness the ones we have are so lively, they drive me batty sometimes.

Is anybody interested in a kitten, there;s 4 of them that momma kitty has brought out and they are way to friendly to be farm cats

Any close to me breed barred rocks? Thinking of replacing my silver laced wyandottes with barred rocks.
I'm not breeding barred rocks, but if you don't mind me asking. I got silver laced wyandottes as well as barred rocks to try them out this year as all I've had before are some production layers. They're only a few weeks old so I haven't had time to evaluate them yet. Is there any particular reason based on the breed or personality of chickens or just personal preference making you want to make this change?

I'm asking because I'm looking for a breed that I will eventually keep (getting something other than hatchery birds) that is dual purpose and that is going to be something that my small nephew would love being around.

Thanks.

I haven't got my chickens yet, 16 days to go lol but i am getting barred rocks based on the reviews I have been reading on here. Reasons: everyone says they are friendly (we have a 4yr old boy), they are good layers and are cold hardy. I wanted speckled sussex but missed the order date.
