You sure this is an EE? Not a pro by any means, but this looks like a BCM? Correct me if I am wrong.. Been reading about genetics with birds goodness my head is spinning from that!
Quote: this is one of the things we were thinking,,,,,would it change the legal aspect of renting equipment if one of us goes with it......hubby is very good at fixing things and now that he has the plucker in front of him, he is sure he could just build another one,,,,so our concern turns to would people take the time to disinfect properly.......we may give it a try and just rent out to people we know....
I took all my birds to Maryland and came back with way more than I wanted to. Of course, my main sellers are my Ameraucanas and all of the ones I have are under 3 months and all mine until they grow out. I thought for sure the chocolates would be a huge hit! No. A lady bought 2 chicks just to get her best hen off the nest. Now, people did want bantam Cochins, but not boys.
I think I want to get Marans again. I need another LF breed. I'll keep my LF choc/mauve Orps going because I really want a flock of Mauve for my own entertainment. Of course, the Ams will stay. I am back to considering selling off the Mille Fleur Cochin project again. I like them, though... I want to continue with the chocolate bantam Cochin project because I am sure they will sell when I get them looking good. And, again, my own entertainment.
What do you guys think I should do for my new LF breed?
Oh, and I have a pair of Tolbunt Polish I am pondering selling. If you are interested, pm me.
went to the fayette swap this morning, as we go every third sunday, anyway, i did sell a couple of young hens that didn't eat much and bought something that will eat alot more, my husband has been wanting a goat to trim the bank so he won't have to, my friend brought a little nanny and her baby billy to sell, so now we're the proud owners of goats again, been a few years since we had milk goats, now we have a mini milk cow and i suppose if i have to, can milk this little girl ,not that i want to.
I was there too. I saw dmccann & her hubby Gerald, but don't think I saw you. I had a table of soaps, bath salts & ribbon set up & about 6 cages of chickens & ducks in a row.
Quote: Mine can definitely fly. The 2nd night we had them the kids let 1 of my hens out when they went to lock them in the coop for the night. She spent the night in the top of a tree on the back of the property. Luckily, Tom called her back the next morning & she walked right back into the pen (we kept Tom & the other hen in the coop until she was in.)
I would be VERY interested in these. Please PM me where & how much. I only have slates so far but am wanting to add some other breeds. I keep all breeds separate for pure eggs.
Question for all of you mathematicians out there. I have a coop that is 4x6 with 8 nesting boxes measuring approximately 18in. Wide. My run is 13x16. My current flock is 11 birds. How many more can I get for them to be comfortable and have enough space?
Quote: wish I would of known this a few days ago,,,,I just ordered turkey eggs,,,we looked for something that we could breed off of and ended up going with the wishard line of standard bronze,,,I have 18 eggs coming, if it would be a good hatch and any one else is interested in breeding them let me know..will be adding sweetgrass next spring also.
I would be interested in the polish depending on price. My son is starting his little flock of "poof heads" & we need to add a few more birds to it. I was there too. I saw dmccann & her hubby Gerald, but don't think I saw you. I had a table of soaps, bath salts & ribbon set up & about 6 cages of chickens & ducks in a row. Those are both heritage breeds. Totally compatible for breeding & reproducing on their own. I have a trio in an 8x8 pen 4 ft high with a 2x3.5 attached glass coop. They seem to like it quite well. Mine can definitely fly. The 2nd night we had them the kids let 1 of my hens out when they went to lock them in the coop for the night. She spent the night in the top of a tree on the back of the property. Luckily, Tom called her back the next morning & she walked right back into the pen (we kept Tom & the other hen in the coop until she was in.) They will go join a wild flock if given opportunity. I have way too much money in my trio & keep mine penned.
I am planning of keeping my turkeys penned up. I don't want to loose them to the wild turkeys running around! Thankzs for all the advice and pictures, you guys are great!

At 4x6 you have about 24 square feet of floor space inside and 208 square ft outside.... average requirements are 2 to 4 sq ft per large fowl bird inside and 10 sq ft outside. You are great on outside space but getting pretty tight on inside space unless you have a lot of banties (cut floor space needs about in half). Nesting boxes numbers are fine also, I think 1 box for every 4 to 6 hens is plenty because they seem to pick a favorite box or two and use them most of the time anyway.
To add many birds you would have to do an addition to the coop to allow a bit more space, unless you are sure you can always allow them outside in the winter... if they are bored cramped from being stuck inside without room to move around then bad habits can start (fighting and feather picking type activities).

they are rarely in the coop as they usually free range until bed time. We also have a smaller coop in the run. Basically a box with a roost that 4 of them seem to love. And the other 7 go in the coop. They all get along well. I am just am addict looking for reasons to get more....
