I just saw a cat get hit by a car out in front of my house. It's still alive, but its leg looks dislocated from the hip, or broken. She crawled under a parked car and we can't reach her. Do you guys have any ideas? We tried to call animal control, but every shelter or whatever in our area is closed Sundays and no one outside of our area will come. And we called the police and got an answering machine. Ridiculous.

I am not a fan of cats but that is sad - is there an emergency type vet you could call??
Well this week is going to be a busy one for me. Will have to clean the house from top to bottom as hubby has finally found a helper to work with him (an old friend from Oklahoma) - he tried advertising this position on craigslist and reddit but everyone that replied to them had nothing but negative things to say "oh that is a lot of hours to work, the allowance per day isn't much" but the way I look at is it, if you can get a pay cheque at the end of 2 weeks that is $2K then why would people complain, most of the work is driving anyways - the rest is just being on point making sure you can find issues that could potentially kill someone ...... ugh wow that turned into a rant - sorry
Anyways, his friend has to do the drug test this week and will probably be flown up here by hubbys company on the 4th (he doesn't do drugs so he'll pass it) and he will be staying with us! I don't mind that fact, it will be just adjusting to having someone else in the house etc, bigger meals to cook when they are home and aren't working.
Looks like I am going to have to move the chicks into the basement - which I didn't want to do as the door to the spare room has a glass panel and i could peek on them any time I wanted
but they will be fine down there, it is all cemented in and I turned on the dehumidifyer today, since all the rain has made it a bit icky down there with a few very small leaks happening.
So now I am going to have to replan the 4th party/BBQ and redo the house lol - god help me. I hope I can get it all under control by the 4th LOL Wish me luck I am going to need it!
Does anybody have any ideas on how to make a cheap yet still safe run (basically a hardware cloth alternative)? I want to put an addition on to my run and as said before hardware cloth is a fortune, atleast $100 for my 8x4x6 addition, and I've heard chciken wire is a joke. There's some creative minds on here and experienced coop builders so I was just wondering.
I use 2x4 welded wire. If the birds are small enough to slip through anf to help reduce reach through by predators, I will put chicken wire on the inside of the welded wire.

We used chicken wire and put plywood around the run about waist high. We have a ton of wood laying around so it was free for us to do. Not sure if it would be cheaper if you have to buy it....When we first put our run in a raccoon reached in and killed 4 of my chickens. Since we put the wood up nothing can reach in. HTH. Good luck!
I have a silly question. My girls free range all day and go to the coop at night. They haven't started laying yet. are they smart enough to go back to the coop into the nesting boxes to lay when they have to or willthey lay them anywhere throughout the yard? I have been looking around to see if they have been laying in the yard places that they frequent but haven't seen anything yet. I don't want to lose eggs because they are out from 6:30 a.m. until 830 at night.

They range from 13 to 17 weeks old. Amber stars, red stars, EEs and a barred rock. I know the 4 older girls are getting close to lasting age and I just worry they will lay everywhere! Lol
