Also don't get her what she wants until she starts acting nicely. A lot of times kids throw tantrums for attention. Yelling and screaming shows attention, acting like she's not there is not showing attention.

Being an alpha is not about being nice or nasty...FMS has some good advise....set standards, ignore bad stuff....it will go away....my two cents....

My girls always make their way back to the coop....usually by 8:30p....imho, let the problem take care of itself....

I have some that don't go in. Pecking order issues at the moment. I don't sweat it other than the predator issue. Of course I don't put them in during storms either. If they are stupid enough to stay outside in a rainstorm, they deserve to be wet. (where have I heard that, oh yeah, my parents many years ago)
 
MCL, mine are in a run, and go inside when they are ready. Sometimes I get lucky with 8:30. Other times the sun still can be seen (thus the chickens) after nine.

Annie, congrats on being close to a layer! As for your daughter, my advice is to listen to what the others say. And if you find it happening in public, I have left a shopping cart in the middle of the store before. Kids know a loving parent would never really leave, so walking away in a store will probably not work. I picked Andrew up, carried him emotionlessly out to the car. Never looked at him. Never looked at other shoppers.
 
Hi PA people;
I'm Ann and have posted a few times, but mostly I lurk in the shadows and learn lots from you all!

Wanted to share that a bear and 3(!) cubs came to visit the yard and coop Monday...ran off when my Mom decided they were a little too close for comfort to the kitchen garbage can, which is just inside the screened sliding door. The mom ran off and cubs bolted up the tree when she closed the glass slider. Can't believe I missed seeing them, I was just out there (Madison township/Moscow) last weekend.

To Annie:
Our Charlotte has always been a handful... Her "mean streak" has always been there, very quick to anger and has a very sharp tongue...but is also the cuddly needy one of my girls too... A girl of extremes! But, her feisty nature has come in handy... She had a rough start medically, and came through it great! She also is nearing her black belt now. Her school teachers love her and tell us she is one of the kindest, most helpful kids to her classmates... (For the first couple of years we were sure they were talking about the wrong kid!) So maybe she won't grow out of it exactly, but will vent her frustration where she knows she'll be loved anyway....
And yes, I totally agree with the no nonsense, very consistent parenting...if you say no, mean it, and follow through on every consequence you set for her! Inconsistent parenting plus manipulative (aka smart!) kid equals big troubles all around, and bigger trouble down the road.
Hope you guys don't mind this newbie putting in my 2cents...

When I went out at 8:45 the girls were all snuggling together in the corner of their run. They were asleep. I did put them in their coop. It was sooooo easy with them being sleepy. I'll give it a few more days and see what happens. Thanks for the input!
