Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hi all,
I am new around here and looking for some others who may be close to me. I am in Coopersburg, PA. I am looking for the best way to get my kids more involved with the chickens - they already do most of the work for them and love them to pieces, but my knowledge is limited to what I can search for online and I think the 4-H club doesn't allow kids under 8 (mine are 3, 5 and 6). Any other ideas?????

Thanks!
Shannan

If you click the link in my signature and in others' it will show you a map and you can see where many of us on here a located.

As far as the 4H my son is 7 and he is a member, but I don't know how young they can be. He is a Cloverbud, as one he is not allowed to receive a prize but he can compete. Another option is open showing at your local fair, or if there is a local poultry club they may have shows. Gavin has learned a lot about showmanship and chickens between me and 4H. He even has a list of specific breeds he wants to get for showing.
It also depends on what they show as to how early they even touch the animal. Chicken and rabbits Cloverbuds can handle animals, I know for horses they're not even allowed to touch the horse, I don't know about other animals.

2 weeks. They grow like weeds!
WHAT? sooo big!! and so cute! Mine will be a week old tomorrow and I swear they have doubled in size since I got them on Wednesday and look completely different! What breeds do you have? I see rocks and reds right?

That was Thursday. They have since started growing tails and I have doubled their brooder space.

I LOVE these pictures and the ones with the 3 week olds out doors!

Next spring I may just have to get me some chicks!

I still don't have my 2 chickens..........oh dear!

They will be worth every penny! At least they are for me! At least 30 hours of entertainment so far from them. No matter how many poopy butts I have to wipe (so far only two), they will be worth it. I cannot get over how cute they are. Can't wait to show them the coop!

Hiya peeps! Looks like I will be hitting the Lebanon Fair on Tuesday so I can take a look at the dairy goats too. Heather helped me with the schedule, TY! I will be looking for your silkies AppleJack.

Chads going to test for us, YAY!,

Am I the only one who found the article Lisa posted funny? Most likely my warped sense of humor, but I especially liked how the writer pointing out the irony of chickens dying on their way to get killed.

I have something non chicken related to share... BirdsbyGavin...this made me think of you. So so very hard to know our loved ones are away from us and all we can do is pray and hope for them. The young men in this video are amazing, it's good to see them having some creative fun. Apparently the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders made a video for them, and then....they returned the favor.

Hey can I ask those of you that are also on facebook for a favor? I am slowly putting together a facebook community page call Chicken Nicks Micro farm. I am just trying to figure it all out and guess my way through it. It will be as much about me learning things as it is about teaching things. It's not all about chickens but also about other aspects of homesteading and so forth. Anyway, to build it up, I would like to get a few likes on the page to make it seem like it has at least a little interest. If you are on facebook and wouldn't mind helping me out, would you like the page for me? It is www.facebook.com/chickenNicks By all means, correct me on anything that is wrong, suggest something new or give me different opinions on things. Thanks for your help!

I thought the whole ruddy article was funny, but I have a twisted sense of humor too. I just have an issue with how far PETA will go.

I always get a kick out of that video, even though I hate the song. So many people complained that we're wasting the tax dollars if they have time to do this. Most of the people I've personally asked who complained about it have no family or close friends in the military, so have no idea what the soldiers go through. Not that anyone who hasn't served does, but those close to them or who have a long family history of military service (both for me) have a better idea. That's one of my pet peeves, among many (just ask Tweetr lol).
