Here is a question for the people that have had chickens for awhile..or anyone that knows..hahaa..Would it be okay for *Lisa* to use developer feed for all> layer & 6 wk old, and put out oyster shell for the layers? would that meet all the birds needs? So she doesn't need to buy two different feeds(layer&grower)...

I have a question for you *Lisa, are you going to be fermenting your feed? I really like how it has worked for my birds even the babies(2wks)...it can be a bit smelly, but I keep mine in the basement..the chick-feed is blah!

...but I think it has really done great for their poopies, they are more solid and it does not smell! I am keeping them in our office right now and believe me if they smelled they would be out!!..hubby didn't want 'livestock' in the house, but because I showed him this would work..well..they are still in here! Fermenting helps the big-girls too, it it so easy cleaning up after them and the smell is a non-issue.

I am assuming your 'developer' is the same as the 'pullet grower' I get. I feed all my birds, no matter the age, 16% grower and allow free choice oyster shell when I see the older girls' shells getting thin. I don't even feed chick starter anymore.

These are the very concerns I raised as well.

I really could use your advice around this.

He said that since I don't have chickens already that the 4 new birds would find a way to live together much easier than if I was adding 6 wk olds to existing residents

He said they could eat layer pellet

I think the grower feed has more protein in it......
the layer feed / pellets has stuff in it to help with egg production

I can offer oyster shell separate ----that is not a problem ----as long as it doesn't harm the 6 wk olds.........

I was considering keeping the 6wk olds in the dog crate/cage inside the run area so that they could be close by but still with some protection..............but would that increase problems or???

I could add a board for a roof to the dog cage and a roosting bar..................but now I don't know what to believe.

I don't want any little birds getting severely hurt!

Please share you views................ I wish the seller was less controversial on this..............but he does raise quite a lot of chickens.....................

Don't give them layer feed, the 6 week olds. You can give everyone flock raiser, or some kind of grower/finisher. If you put out calcium the chicks won't bother with it. So you would be safe. The dog crate in the coop is a good idea. That is how I introduce new birds in with the existing flock. Some breeds are more aggressive then others. I would not risk the youngsters safety!

yes, sorry...it is the same, at least that is how I meant it. Chick-Developer... Grower....those two names are on feed bags all over , do they mean the same thing? I was under the impression they are. Am I wrong?

..... Does the 'developer/grower' have less protein than 'chick-starter'?
I get my chick-feed at a mill, the people there suggested I use the broiler- mash for the chicks because of the higher protein, they said it would be real good for them. They don't carry chick starter, they said that the broiler mash is what the people that come in use for their chicks to start. I did tell them they are layers, not meaties...they said it was okay. I am using it- fermenting, The chicks like it. It smells though

...the layer feed doesn't smell as bad. Is that because of the higher protein?

I have finally rescheduled my chicken pick up for.................drum roll please..............THIS FRIDAY AFTERNOON!

I am picking up 2 laying hens
one is EE
one is NHR
and two 6 week old hens
one is golden laced Wyandotte
one is barred rock

I am psyched.

the guy said I could feed the 6 week and the laying hens laying pellets.......
I was worried that the 6 weekers might need some other type of food------do you all agree with this?

I will have pictures of my first chickens in my own yard EVER------after I get them AND
the completed coop and run too.

I am still healing a nasty shin wound I sustained while building the coop------------I tripped over a cinder block.........ouch ouch ouch
it got infected and I am on my 2nd round of antibiotics!

I was hoping this would be totally healed prior to the chickens arrival ------so that any chicken related germs would not complicate matters.-----well it was supposed to be healed by yesterday and now I have the new stronger and longer antibiotics....................so keep your fingers crossed that I don't have any further problems with this!

looking forward to Friday !
Hoping I have a safe coop and run for these new arrivals..................cant imagine finding out a predator got in!

Lisa:

good to hear you got things worked out...I think getting them all at the same time is better than adding two later....just really keep an eye on the big girls(you may need to separate them until the chicks get bigger) ...for my two cents, it might be better to feed grower feed to the big girls than layer feed for the babies...good luck!!!

need ideas,,,put a bunch of chicken pieces in crock pot last night and went to work,,,came home to a very well done chicken (it was on high, thought I turned that down ) anyway as it fell apart taking it out of the crockpot it left behind a very thick and dark stock, looks yummy,,,now what can i put in that stock later today and then go to bed, looking to have a nice dinner when i get up tonight.......not chicken corn soup,,,no more corn for awhile (corn really does pass thru and stays whole,,how nutritious can that be )....
