Caught our one leghorn girl in the act! Two eggs in two days, better than I would have thought given their age.

...I have watched Ginger lay, really something to witness..hahaha, but have never had the opportunity to catch it on camera...cool!

Turns out she was done before I took it, she moved a little and there was the egg. That's okay with me though, I don't know that'd she'd like me watching. Then again THEY don't seem to mind an audience when they're doing "other" things. lol

GM all:

A couple of questions for the more experienced...

I have two BCMs that are approaching 14wks.....I have them on the last of my grower crumble......
I have let the babies out to free range with the big girls(and boy)...but the babies run from the biggins and the six girls are really not that interested....not even the roo....
So, if I move the babies to the big pen there'd be only layer pellets...the pen is 5'x20'....I can put some logs etc in there...LisaY seemed to think it helped her situation.....

So should I buy another bag of grower (I really don't want to )and keep the babies in the grow out pen....or just toss them the big coop and let chickens be chickens....lastly if I move them is it better and night or during the day....Thanks in advance!!!
we are having or had similar situations! I also started with the dog crate in the run....................I wonder if you had the dog crate in your BIG coop if that might help them get accustomed?
The first day my 6 wk little ones would run to the other side of the crate whenever the big girl walked by.............they huddled together in fear. Gradually less of that.
The next day I left the crate in with the door open................not sure how that would play out but I thought a few barriers might help.....................they all ran around the run and around the crate yet seemed okay................still avoiding each other and sometimes pecking ( semi aggressive or assertive from the big girl)

Durring the second day I decide to just take the dog crate out...................so everyone had more space to run away ...................and added a log as a barrier.............and so if the little ones wer near the big girl on one side of the log and she seemed like pecking they ran around it for safety....................

I have been feeding everyone grower feed because that is what everyone here advised and I just put out the oyster shell and grit for self selection feeding of the big girl.

I have to tell you the little ones and big girl have really gotten more comfortable with each other steadily every day and now can be eating out of the same bowl with minimum upset...........that would never have been possible initially..............

I am just sharing my observations...............as I have only done this is Friday.............not even a full week!

good luck!

Sounds like some symptoms of botulism. I was reading a thread on here about it a few weeks ago, under the duck area, and the person had found a duck floating in their pond, and it was very "off balance" before that. Are there wild mushrooms growing where they can eat them? According to what I read, the wild mushrooms seemed to be the cause. Just a thought from what you described.

ETA: as far as I read on the thread (I didn't finish reading it) the person did not have a necropsy done and was not positive that it was botulism. It was just suspected and they were giving another duck showing symptoms a strong antibiotic.
oh oh.................I put a log into my run that has fungus or mushrooms growing on its side! Is this what you mean....................I must take it out!

I'm not sure what kind of fungus/mushrooms they were referring to on the thread, they only said wild mushrooms. I know my parents never put mushrooms in our home canned spaghetti sauces because of the risk of botulism, but I eat fresh (store bought) and cooked mushrooms on a regular basis. We only eat wild mushroom cooked though, we've never eaten them raw, mostly because they are WILD and ya never know what's pooed where they grow.

I would check online and see what kind of fungus/mushroom it is. There are many wild mushrooms that are poisonous/toxic to humans, but I don't know if they are to other animals. I'm not super protective with my birds, but I have been removing all mushrooms from the yard. Especially if I know they're toxic to humans.

But my flock is loose to the property except at night and will try eating ANYTHING, even the scraps left by the cats or dogs. They even tried eating a possum Ginger (the one dog) killed before I noticed it and got it cleaned up. You'd think I never feed them the way they go after some stuff...
