I had to switch to my computer since the ipad won't let me multi quote and if I do one at a time I will never get on with my day!!! lol
Glad they're both alive! Sorry it worked out that way though

I was wondering what the worst case scenario would be if I didn't separate a broody. Now, unfortunately, I know. I knew roos might kill a chick, I don't know why I never thought hens would try to. Thank you for sharing this info.
I always thought the roosters would be the violent ones but I've noticed anytime we introduce new chickens to the flock it's the hens that are the aggressive ones. If I ever decide to process my extra birds I will go back to this situation and the way I felt. In that moment I could have cooked any one of them up for dinner without a second thought!!! lol

That stinks. Sorry to hear that.

My morning is the usual super busy first day of school. My daughter is starting second grade and my son is starting his first day of kindergarten...aaaannnnddd, they are fighting already. Lol.
We don't go back until after labor day this year because the teachers might strike. I hope your kiddos have a good first day back. First day of kindergarten is a big deal!!!
Gavin's NOT happy with me this morning. I got him up around the time he'll need to get up tomorrow, and the rest of the school year. He said "I thought you were gonna let me sleep in one last time." I answered, "I did, you got a whole 15 extra minutes." Apparently that wasn't the answer he was looking for lol.
Gonna be a busy day, gotta finish cleaning Gavin's room, get him ready for school tomorrow (backpack etc), and clean out the coop (can't do deep litter, exposed wooden floor, at least the poop board has helped a lot), on top of the usual chores and cleaning...

I need to get the house back in order. Feeling dizzy is making me lazy with the housework. I have to start getting the kids back into a routine too. I've been letting them have sleepovers in each others rooms and even though they have to be in their rooms by 8:30 I've been letting them stay up and play. I'm sad they are going back soon but I won't miss the non stop fighting! lol

Yay!!! I remember when I found our very first egg. I came running in the house like I hit the lottery! So exciting!

Unfortunately Peeps I was already at work when my DW found it and texted me! However I am still excited and can't wait to get home to look at it. It was even in the nest box. Guess my coop building skills are adequate after all.

Hahaha Gavin sounds like a character!

I am so sorry :( I wonder what happened? Did something scare them off or did they go off on their own? I really hope the other two come back.

Not sure. We've had them skip into the neighbor's yard before, but they've always managed to come back by dusk.

This morning Simba was raising a fit from inside the coop; she could hear her sisters but not see them. That's what clued me in to the survivors. I covered the coop window and listened carefully for the response crowing, and that's when I found Scarlet and Tootsie on the other side of the fence, along with the corpses of Sleepy and Spot.

According to my wife, Clover and Nicky are still missing at the moment. Given the number of feathers I saw over there (that I need to clean up this afternoon) I'm not hopeful. :-(

And after all that stress, Simba and Pelly still laid eggs this morning.

I'm fencing off the back half of the lot when I get home from work. The girls shouldn't have to worry about getting lost or eaten. They deserve better than that!

On the plus side, with them socialized at schoo, they'll hopefully have an outlet for frustrations, and will fight less when they're home. :)

A couple of thoughts and a question:

1. I have just moved my 2 baby marans(15weeks) in with the big girls.....but the they really are not mixing....they stay apart....whats confusing is that two of my more dominant hens are afraid of the babies(go figure) and move away from them while the other four girls...chase the babies and the babies run....even treats can't get them to hang together...the babies even run from the roo....and the babies are still going back to the grow out pen in the evening....any thoughts? The only thing I can think to do is to keep them penned up together and not let then free range....

2. is it possible to use wood chips as bedding in coop? Is there a down side? I think I could get a tree guy to dump a load for free....I am currently using pine shaving as they are about the same cost as straw or hay....

3. For LC, if you can get a recording of a roo crowing, you might play that through your stereo loud with the speakers pointed out the window....if your two missing ones hear it, they might respond to it...I dunno, that might be a really stupid idea......
