So a mallard drake, who flew off the other day, decided to come home this morning. So I put a second pool into the run today. (Even though they're only in there at night, it's better than them trying to swim in their water dishes. Anyway now the mallard drakes are trying to hog both pools and chasing the pekins and the scovies out/away. They were even chasing the others away from the water dishes. Not a happy bird momma right now. The little momma I can understand, especially near the nest box, but the boys what the heck?!?! D*** my promise to Gavin that the first gen of ducks won't be eaten...
And of course a certain "lil angel" is giving me a hard time about getting to bed on time for a school night...
At least the chickens were behaved, and were all in the coop before dark tonight.

A couple of thoughts and a question:

1. I have just moved my 2 baby marans(15weeks) in with the big girls.....but the they really are not mixing....they stay apart....whats confusing is that two of my more dominant hens are afraid of the babies(go figure) and move away from them while the other four girls...chase the babies and the babies run....even treats can't get them to hang together...the babies even run from the roo....and the babies are still going back to the grow out pen in the evening....any thoughts? The only thing I can think to do is to keep them penned up together and not let then free range....

2. is it possible to use wood chips as bedding in coop? Is there a down side? I think I could get a tree guy to dump a load for free....I am currently using pine shaving as they are about the same cost as straw or hay....

3. For LC, if you can get a recording of a roo crowing, you might play that through your stereo loud with the speakers pointed out the window....if your two missing ones hear it, they might respond to it...I dunno, that might be a really stupid idea......

My chickens stay with the ones they were hatched with when they free range but all live together (except the younger ones that are still have a separate sleeping area). It's actually kind of funny how they part ways when I let them out of the coop. Since I only have 1 Rooster with the Leghorns and White Rocks I wonder if he will stop harassing his favorite girl and mate with the White Rocks when the time comes. He leaves the Silkie girls alone and since our Silkie rooster went MIA I need to find them a man :) My husband was thinking of buying a chipper and using the wood chips in our coop too. We chop our own wood to heat the house in the winter and have a ton of Pine trees that need cut down. Last year he cut 10 down and I posted it as free wood on Craigslist thinking someone would want it for something but not one person was interested. It all got dumped over the hill. I could have had wood chips for the next 10 years! lol

Well, I just added 6 more hens to the flock! I'm very excited! I finally got my last two breeds on my wish list!!! 1 Silkie and 2 Ameracaunas plus some RIR's and so forth. I am seriously excited about this. They a re a little older than I would prefer but less than 2 years old so they should still lay for a while longer. They are also prone to go broody which is great for me because I couldn't get any of mine to go broody to save my life. They all look healthy and have no lice or bugs of any kind. The lady I bought them from is awesome so I am like a kid on Christmas morning right now. Woo hoo!!!
Pictures! What color Silkie?

I have a confession........I'm not as fond of my White Rocks and Leghorns as I am my "cuter" birds. I love that they do or will give me great eggs but they aren't as sweet as the Silkies or as playful as the other ones. Okay, now I feel better :) That being said I was out taking some pictures of the new chicks and decided to get a few of the other birds free ranging. I let them all out ALL day today. I was nervous for Pee Wee (Serama) and Thunderbolt & Daisy (Easter Eggers) but they did great!

I'm scared Pee Wee is a rooster.......

They are always together! Love it!

I know I asked before but no one replied. Breed guesses on the black and white rooster? Egg that he hatched from was listed as Cochin mix.

They are so cute together!!!

Just a few hours old and all fluffed up!

The one with the bloody head :(

Her wing looks much better today.

Wow! Those babies look happy and healthy! Despite the turmoil, you are a good chicky Momma. Hope Gavin has a wonderful first day of school, we don't start till next week. My sons first day of high school, yikes!

No pictures yet. I got them home after dark. She is a white silkie. As you know, I really just wanted a silkie be ause they are so prone to go broody. After talking to the woman I bought them from, I think I may know why none of my birds ever go broody. It might be because they don't have enough privacy. My nest boxes are really just kind out in the open. I am going to make some adjustments this week to some of my coops and see what happens. With my luck, all my hens will go broody and I won't get any eggs anymore!

It can't hurt to try but my Silkie went broody in the run right in front of the door. When we moved her she wouldn't go on the new nest. This last time she went broody in a bucket in the middle of the run. She must like to flaunt her broodiness ;)

Glad momma and babies are doing so well. She's a lovely girl. How old is Pee Wee? Ours are 9 and 10 weeks old, but I don't have any pics of any of ours, for comparison, before 5 weeks since they were that age when I picked the first 3 up.

I hope so too, I can't believe he's starting second grade already. Seems like yesterday he was starting Kindergarten. I'll be trying to get his dupa up in about an hour and half or so. He's definitely my son, takes at least 1/2 an hour to get him up and moving. We both take after my mother, she sets her alarms for 1.5 hrs before she needs to be up so she can hit the snooze.

Got the older two boys off to their first day of school. Will's first day of junior high... Now i have to get the twins up and ready for their first day of 2nd grade.
