Ah... a house without kids.  I love it.  I hate getting up with the kids in the morning and I hate the calls about Devon being bad, but I love not having them here.  Thank goodness for school.

I feel the same way! Lol

So, i moved my momma's and their 12 babies to a larger pen. They all seem happy with the change. They now are on the ground instead of being in the rabbit hutch. Although the babies have no clue what a ramp is or how to use it so i hope the momma's teach them.

Too funny! I think the school nurse has my cell on speed dial, never does a week go by that I don't speak to her at least twice...sometime 3x's in one day..lucky me!

Sally sunshine would have Brahma of rare colors
Chiqueschicks usually has Orpington chicks, besides he needs a reason to run the incubator

Thanks for three encouragement!

At least mine is off. :) I'm already talking to Jethro about "needing" some. Plus, there are ten ten day old in the brooder (along with a sole SFH). Hopefully I'm done for the fall. I have more young birds than I wantv/need right now.

Getting Gavin on the bus was like pulling teeth, since our mallard momma decided to go broody today. He was super excited, until I told him it'll be about a month until they hatch. To get his butt in gear I told him that the more he's at school the faster the days will go by, plus they will hatch around fair week, so he'll be home for a week when they hatch or shortly after they've hatched. With all his excitement I hope at least one hatches.
Had another pleasant surprise when I got back from taking him to the bus, two eggs already. Usually the girls don't start laying until after 10.
My kids have always did great on the first day of school but this summer my very social daughter decided to attach herself to my hip. I'm hoping she won't cry on the first day. She has her brother and friends on the bus so fingers crossed! I hope Gavin has a great first day of school!
So I am thinking bout getting a pair of Buff Orpington hens in the spring. Any advice or ideas where I can find just 2 in the western pa, Pittsburgh area? Not sure if my local farm store will carry them.
What other types of Chickens do you have? Just wondering in case you ever want to swap fertile eggs or are interested in swapping chicks in the Spring.
Awh soooo cute!! Glad everyone is OK, love seeing chick pictures- it reminds me of spring.

Also, as far as Silkies go, do you guys house them in with your 'regular' chickens, or do they require different housing?
Right now they are housed with the Leghorns and White Rocks. It was a process to get them to all to get along. At the time I had 4 Leghorns and 7 Silkies. We lost 2 to predators and I had to give away 3 roosters. When my husband builds the new coop I will keep all the smaller chickens on one side and all the big girls on the other. I've been talking about this new coop for so long I'm starting to think it is never going to get built!!!! lol

Just curious for all you duck owners. Do you have them for their eggs, meat, both or just enjoyment. Until I joined this site I didn't realize how many people raise other types of birds. I keep seeing peacock eggs on Ebay and it's killing me not to get some! lol. Not sure what I would do with one but they are soooo pretty to look at :)

Quote: How old are the chicks and are they in with larger birds? I'm nervous about moving the chicks back in with the big girls since they attacked them. I know it won't be for awhile but I'm a worry wart!!! lol

Oh, and since they are in a dog crate right now. When will the Mama want to take them out? I don't want to keep them cooped up and when the time comes I will make sure the other birds aren't out yet. Just need an approximate age. Thanks!

I just wanted a couple different opinions on this:

I have a 12 week old sebright rooster in with my standard hens. He's the bottom of the pecking order and often has to sleep on the floor. He wanders around by himself a lot, and just seems depressed. He's a slow maturing, very nice little guy. If I got him a few bantam hens for his own, do you think he'd be happier? Or become a jerk?
