Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Busy morning today. Made breakfast and lunch for my boys, got the kids to school, did my feeding rounds, painted a turkey coop we made this week. Getting 2 hens and a tom this weekend. So excited to be getting them. Looking turkeys, not for eating turkeys.

About to relax a bit before making sure the new turkey run is completly finsished. Going to drink a nice hot cup of purple açai and blueberry green tea. It's a crisp morning in the Poconos. Fall is in the air.

would you put a price on the chicks you intend to hatch???
Bruce would put a price on his right arm if you where interested!! HAHAH

Need an opinion...strange thing happened tonight. The whole broody chicken thing is new to me so maybe I am just hopeful. When I went to close the coops tonight, one of my leghorns was all fluffed up in the nest box sitting on a golf ball. She was very upset about me checking under her for an egg. It was so weird that she was even in the box so late. Anyway, has anyone ever heard of a leghorn going broody? I know I could just walk my lazy butt up to the coop right now and see if she is still there but that's not going to happen. I guess I will see in the morning.
My Orp has gone broody, Girl has been sitting on a nest for getting close to 2 months.. I just gave her hatching eggs (Thanks again Martha!! ) I moved her to a new area, ( didn't cover her) and she took off back to her Favorite Nesting box, Well know I put her back with all the eggs and covered her little butt so she has to stay in her penned in area. This girl is serious I tell ya! She has not left her nest box to eat or drink! I am getting a little worried about her. But wowsers is she dedicated, I have a few more eggs in the house I am going to give her tonight, since she is being such a good broody mama (if she doesn't kill her self in the process) Is there a limit on how many eggs you can put under a broody? If i put the rest of my eggs in she will have 11 under her...

There have been a few folks over on the broody hen thread with leghorns that went broody, and a friend of mine had one thinking about it but she quit after a week. So yes, it certainly can happen, but I would keep her on golf balls for at least a week to make sure she is serious, and if you are going to move her to a different nest then do it early on and before you give her hatching eggs.

Just finished an extended run on my coop, the coop was built 8 months ago. I now wish I made it bigger 2 days later but it still gives them and extra 32 ft sq of run space and I don't hit my head on this one

fall is def in the air - I have the headcold from hell to prove it :(

The person to contact is Dr. Nan Hanshaw. As the licenses run December to December it doesn't make much sense to have the classes in the fall, check out the Penn Ag web site, I've found them listed on there in previous years.
Yes, you are. And FYI, MsLadyHawke breeds and shows Barred Hollands and she's here in PA.
Still cracking up about your chicken wing comment....Dare I say it?....

Everytime I call her I get the message that she is unavailable.

Anyway you can make a pitstop near Hazleton?? I am interested in female runners.!!

I am having a heck of a problem. I have so many wild birds coming into the chicken barn that there is 2 inches of crap on top of my nest boxes, and waterers. I had 2 die so far from who knows what! Today is going to be wild bird proofing. This side of the barn I am working on is 12 ft wide, 72 ft long, and 14 ft high! That is a big area to wild bird proof. I don't wanna lose air flow either. I tried the plastic owls, they didn't work..........................................

I just want to reiterate I hate starlings, and whatever else is crapping in my chicken waterers! NOT to mention eating my feed!!!!

One of my Dorks is going through the same thing...I have not seen her move in two days....she even let one of the baby marans peck her and she is one of the dominant girls in the flock...go figure....

try flight netting... there are places that will custom make the netting to the length and width and size hole to prevent this and try to put a roof-like shelter over your waterer and nesting boxes.. and wherever else you want small places for no poop.
