When we started this adventure, they were supposed to be *MY* chickens. (In the look at what *YOUR* chickens did to ^MY* garden sense...) Now they're *OUR* girls, and I'm pretty sure she has a better relationship with them than I do!

Assuming the folks at mypetchicken.com can be believed, the first and third are easter eggers of some variety, and the second is supposed to be a Black Jersey Giant.

LizardCat, they are soooo adorable! Let me know how you like your Jersey Giant, it's a breed I was considering...

Okay, coop construction: got the back wall up (which is also able to swing open as the cleaning door) and got the linoleum sheeting on the floor today.

Dies anyone have any good ideas of where to get cheap linoleum sheeting? I don't have as much as I thought, and I'd like to use it on the interior walls to cover the insulation and make for easy clean up. I was thinking of going to the local flooring place and ask I could buy some remnants, since I'm not picky about color. Already checked Craigslist today too, nothing there. I'm always open to suggestions!

I got vinyl tile from dollar general. Decent price for the square footage, but it wasn't a sheet, but tiles, and now I regret it. The Girls have been able to scratch some of the corners up, and once a little littler gets under there, they don't stick. If you were looking to cover the WALLS, you shouldn't have the same problem I did.

Some folks here on BYC recommended painting with roofing rubber/tar, which is what I ended up doing. Not the prettiest, and it stinks for a few days, but I have yet to find anything at all that I couldn't wash off the walls with just a quick blast of the hose. Not the cheapest solution either, but definitely durable.

you would be amazed..........as in AMAZED what you can get thru freecycle networks...............are you familiar with them. That is how I got a pile of excellent shingles and the guy actually delivered them too! free and delivered...........what the heck!

just ask in your area freecycle email group...........if you don't know about it just google freecycle...............they are regional -------------and many regions have several...........like I look at chester county freecycle, kingofprussia, Collegeville, Montgomery county, Delaware county etc. etc..............

I also used left over tile I found in my basement from some family flooring projects of long ago................they don't stick but I duct taped them down and that is working fine in my nest box............

you could also post a request for tiles or vinyl on freecycyle....................

Annie-----your coop looks like its coming along nicely....................way to go! have you planned out where you will put the roosts and nest box and ventilation etc.

I did not allow enough room for indoor food and water containers...............and feel I wish it was still bigger in case they stay in a little more in the winter..............not sure if they will be well behaved if they are all cooped up in a cold spell...................

what type of roof are you thinking about

what are your thoughts on keeping it cool in summer and dry and ventilated yet warm in winter?

Hi! I'm new to BYC and so excited. I live in Devon, PA (outside Philadelphia.) We plan on acquiring our first chicks this spring and I'm doing lots of reading/learning on this site. I have questions about whether our 160 year old barn may be converted into a coop (see link below)...

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/828484/is-part-of-a-160-year-old-barn-in-pa-acceptable-for-a-coop

Does anyone in my area have recommendations for where to buy chicks/supplies? We most likely will go to Pickering Valley Feed in Exton but I'm happy for other suggestions.

Thanks!!!!

Welcome welcome! I am very new here too and will be getting chicks in the spring also. I was going to get my chicks from a local store, but people in this forum always seem to have something hatching...

:welcome

Thanks guys, I haven't tried freecycle yet, although I am a member. I will have to try that next!

I have an idea of where my next boxes will go, where my roosts will go and I also have plans for ventilation too. I hopefully will have enough room for indoor waterer sand food dishes. :)
