Speaking of turkeys, when you guys sell a turkey on the thread here, is it usually alive and feathered? Or processed? I would love a fresh turkey, but if it came home alive, it would stay alive.

well,,, for me it goes by whatever the customer wants,,,,I do get a few people who want the birds alive, then they process them over time.

Thanks yet again for the great welcomes!

SilkieSensation - Than you much for the offer, we're not at that point yet. I'm looking at sometime next year to get the coop and run built. But, we'll see, all depends on timing and $$

Michelle (msladyhawke) - I like the idea of helping out breeds in danger of disappearing, especially older breeds. They are a great link to our past. Dorkings are on my wish list.

LisaYolkum - I'm pretty sure I have Yocums in my family tree, on my dad's side! If that's your true last name anyhow haha! Otherwise, forget it. I grew up in SE Berks, went to school in Mont Co.,have good friends in Phoenixville and used to live in Wallingford.

I'll be sure to post when we're ready to get chicks, or eggs and look to my PA friends for help! :)

Hi, wasn't sure how to start a new on topic thread so just replied to this.
We're in Northampton County and have a very small backyard flock. Already my husband is planning for expansion next spring.
Our goal is a colorful egg basket (The chickens are pets.) and I'm interested in adding a few (two or three) chocolate egg layers and increasing the colored egg layers we have.
Does anyone know a good source in the area for peeps or are there ever swap meets or chicken sales?
Or do I need to mail order?

Dek:

Howdy, many folks have chocolate and other colored eggs layers....I've always had a hard time knowing who's breeding what...it changes alot...so, there are many for sale at all times..I'd suggest posting your zip and letting Missy add you to the community walk http://www.communitywalk.com/pa_bycers/map/1552784

Heritage breeds are great. I personally have 2 of them: Barred Hollands and Dorkings. Both need a lot of help recovering off the endangered poultry list. Let me know in the future if you'd like some of either one. I am in Chester County as well.
Michelle

Missy:

Didn't know you had dorks...any reds? My coop is packed through the winter, but I like the Dorks personalities and didn't know anybody breeding local....

A really neat map. How can my zip be added? Any way the participants can communicate? One is really close, probably within five miles of me and the other with her moniker and location, wonder if that is where my friend got my two Jersey giants for me?
