I have 16 assorted hens (no 2 the same) covered by a super blue (leghorn/ameraucana), an olive egger (cuckoo marans/ameraucana) & the cream legbar boy. I get a gorgeous rainbow in both eggs & chicks & it gets even more diverse with each generation hatched.

That sounds like my dream. A rainbow of eggs and a rainbow of hens laying them with a couple of gorgeous roosters to keep it all going.

I just hatched a whole bunch right before I moved but now my girls are on strike. Only 2 eggs in the past week. I have a bunch of chicks in the brooders for sale if you "need" some. I can ship if the drive is too far...lol

everyone was in bed at 4:30, even thought they were hanging out in the coop/on the roosts... ALL day!! In their de-fence..it was/is soo frigid out there!! Finally shut their door at 5:00...i just can't seem to make myself do it before 5...never know if one will change their minds & come out to get a drink or something...they are in there for 14 hours....that is a long time for anything!
Looks like the temps tomorrow are going to be "warm"..(using the term very loosely!)..enough to finally get some FF into them!!...and it is supposed to snow again...

..okay..i don't care anymore...as long as those temps. stay up a bit!!...anyone get any more snow pics?? I can't be the only one who is crazy..um I mean, interested enough in pictures...

On Easter I'll have EE babies just as a heads up. See what I did there? I'm hatching Easter Eggers ON Easter! Woo!!!! They'll be like 3 dollars. I'll also have adorable little barnyard mixes for $1 or for free if you're from here.

18 weeks till' Easter!

Indeed. Y U Tempt me so! D: If only I had the money and accommodations right now. If you have any babies around early Summerish I just might take some off of your hands.

How are the rest of the "newbies" doing with their birds???

My guys are all doing great. Ms Buffington/Ms Butterworth/Dumpy, my fat fluffy Buff Orpington with a million names started to lay last week. Got my poor daughter in trouble nearly too. She laid an egg on Monday. Then didn't lay another one for a couple of days. On Thursday I had work for the first time in like three weeks so I wasn't home to tuck the birds in. Called the kids and asked my younger daughter, Jamie to bring in their water, close their coop door, and make sure she checked the nest boxes in case anybody laid late because the egg would be frozen hard and burst till morning if not.
When I opened their coop door in the morning I took a peek in the nest box and there was a lovely dark brown egg frozen solid and split wide open. I was so mad! Jamie swore up and down that she did check the nests and there were no eggs the night before. I yelled at her insisting she must have forgotten to check because none of the hens sleep in the nest boxes and there's no way they would have gotten down off the roosts in the middle of the night to lay an egg. And she let poor Dumpy's 2nd egg burst and now it was no good. So there I was being all mad at her over neglecting her duties. That night I was off and I closed up the coop, checked the nests myself and brought in their waterers. No eggs anywhere to be found. Saturday morning, what did I find when I went to leave them out of the coop at around 5:30 in the morning? A beautiful dark brown egg, cold but not frozen so she must have laid it at least an hour or so before I found it. Boy did I feel bad! Went right in, woke Jamie up, gave her a hug and apologized for not believing her about the egg. Apparently my little Dumpy is a very early morning layer. And she's laid an egg every day since then as well. Looks like another girl trying to compete with my White Leghorn for the title of top layer. As long as they keep making me breakfast and don't get too carried away with the competition they can do whatever they want. ^_^

Katt, I almost always run at least 1 of my 3 bators at all times. The only reason I don't have 1 running right now is because I knew we were moving & stopped setting eggs. My last batch was hatching while we were moving...lol

I have not yet found a place to put my bator in this 24 ft camper that is our temporary home but as soon as I do I will be hatching again. I currently have 2 brooders full of chicks growing out. All are 1 1/2 weeks to almost 4 months old. I usually set a batch of eggs every 6-10 days.

well ms purdy:

My original six girls are doing well....one on my dorks seems not to want to lay an egg the other went broody and hasn't laid in about two months....my GLWs and BOs are still doing well and one BO is recovering from a broody stint....my Marans girls are laying and being a pia to the dorks...my main roo has a bit of frostbite but is getting to be quite the stud muffin....and baby roo is will be getting his game on soon as he is just getting as big as the girls...what I find interesting is that each breed really does have its own personality....
