Arielle got back to me on the Northeastern Congress thread, her turkey are not laying right now...
I routinely rake out the main run and put down dry straw, in the summer I fill in with soil and rock as much as my back can tolerate.
thank you for asking her about the eggs Blarney..

....and thank you all for the feed back on the yard-run matter.....
I have a small area that grows grass under thick wire, will try to post picks this week......but basically it is wiring flooring out of the hog house laid on wood blocks with seed under neath
pics are how I learn....please & thank you!!!!

Hardware cloth on 2x frame. I had some 1/2 around. It has worked well.
excellent

I was wondering similar things............about the grass growing thru a box with wire in the middle............I was wondering how this might impact their feet. I do like the idea of them having grass and of the grass continuing to grow....

anyone had some experience with this.

I think if grass is grown under something that is too dark--------it would be too shady and might not grow...........this is just my current brainstorming.....I have not tried this.

I am also thinking of contacting some tree work people who look for places to drop off wood chips.........so I might put in a whole lot of wood chips on the ground.

in the fall I had a big pile and tended to rake out the dirty stuff........and put in a new layer of wood chips just in case of germs etc from all the pooping etc.
i don't have access to wood chips....will come up with something..

I may have a problem.
Is it normal for my hen to be molting at this time?
We have 5 Hens. 3 New Hampshire Reds and 2 Buff Orphingtons
1 of my New Hampshire Reds is showing a rapid loss of feathers around the head and spreading downward.
All the other chickens look normal.
The only thing that we did lately was put some vaselene on thier combs about a week ago.
It looks like she may also be loosing weight, but then she is loosing feathers so that may not be a factor.
I kinda new at this, so Id figgure Id ask?
We are getting 2 to 3 eggs a day from the group, and we don''t see anything out of the norm except for the loss of feathers from our one girl.

are you sure you dont have infestation of some sort? your on a preventative schedule? They are getting enough protein in the diet?

I would try giving that hen some extra vitamins or just do all of them, a vit pack from jeffers online is quite cheap and easily added to feed or waters. Can you try giving the hen some tuna and feed her some scrambled eggs that will help her add some weight. be careful with molting at this time of year, they can easily freeze even if its not freezing out.

Good luck with her

Hounds:

In particular, one of my GLWs is molting...I think lose of feather affects a bird...(just my opinion)...I think birds who go broody have the same loss of confidence til they get their game back...if they are eating and drinking and nobody is giving them a hard time...you are in good shape....my two cents....

Thanks thats what it seems like. I did have a brooder light on most of last week, so they wouldn't freeze.
Now I will have to keep an eye on her to make sure she don't freeze.

I have been giving everyone extra protein( dog food, table meat, oats/lentils) throughout the winter, also vit./mins. with electrolytes & Vetrx in their water . Just want to make sure the ones who are molting get that extra they need and it does the rest of them good too. Hope this helps too
