Am I the only one that forgets that "HD" on this thread is Home Depot and not Harley Davidson?

I'm so excited...I got my first eggy from one of my new hens. Not sure which one but I suspect it might be the Golden Laced Wyandott. The guy I get my chickens from said that the Black Australorp was slower in developing so that's why I suspect it might be the GLW. I had forgotten how small the first eggs are. It took my older ones 2 months after we got them to start laying, we have just had the 2 new ones 1 month. And it was in the same nesting box as one of the Orpies eggs so I see they are letting them use the boxes too.

Since I got the 2 new ones, the older gals usually go to sleep on the floor. When I went out to close their pop door, I opened the coop to be sure they were all in & saw the new gals on the roosting bar & the older ones hunkered down on the straw on the floor. Looked like that might be the bed for the night. On occasion we have seen them all on the bar together but that isn't often. Plus we have the infrared lights on & they don't like them at all. The stir around much longer & do odd things....lol I worry that they will be too cold on the floor.

I got a whole bunch of seeds in the mail..............

I ordered a ton............wondering how many will actually make it to good locations and grow well...........

hopefully a lot!

I want to grow potatoes this year too! and lots of stuff for the chickens as well as myself since I cant let the girls run loose around the yard................I still want to offer them good stuff!

There will be a lot of work in my spring this year...............I hope I can do it all--------------

the garden and chicken coop and new chicks etc.........is all after my day job!

I ordered chicks from Pickering Valley Feed in Exton...............

Where do they get them from?

With all the discussion in this group about certified hatcheries and testing etc................I wonder the source of my day old chicks?

I understand they have at least one vaccination-----I think for Mareks...........but am not certain.............

I am feeling a bit uninformed..........or perhaps have not looked into this enough...............such a newbie!

what would you all rec I do?

I have 4 birds now and have 5 assorted day old chicks pre-ordered for March 10th roughly.

should I ask a bunch more questions of Pickering Valley?
what about medicated vs non medicated chick feed.............I was reading on this...........and its just not yet clear in my mind...........depends on what vaccine they have rec'vd I think.

I believe Pickering gets their birds from Ideal in Texas. I use medicated feed for chicks, but not everyone does.

Just got back from the ER, 3rd time there in as many weeks. First my Mom, then DH, tonight was my Mom again, she keeps falling. Everyone's good. I really hope I don't get the flu, ERs have the tendency to be filled with sick people. Go figure.

blarney im sorry hun. hope mom does better.

DH is actually talking about clearing the spot for the coop! YAY! We'll see if it actually happens - this week is not good for outdoor work, no matter how much he prefers it to heat.

I have a few questions:

1) If I get one kind of chicken from one person, and another from another, and so on, up to 6 different birds from 6 different people, how do I quarantine? Do I have to do it for each new bird? I would assume so, but if they are all new, what then? How would that work?

2) How does the automatic door work? What if the chickens are not wanting to go inside when it is timed to shut? I'd still have to do chicken patrol, so how does the automatic door help?
