I agree with troy. I don't use medicated starter because SFH seem to have problems with it, they develop problems, so I just quit using it all together. I do put lumps of dirt and grass in my brooder to build resistance to cocci. I believe that is what medicated is for.
My run has an open top. My losses this winter have been to predators. I guess the smart and strong survive.

couldn't have said it better,,,I have not had 1 cocci incident since I quit using medicated feed

Hey everybody! Loving the beautiful ice pictures, but sad for everyone who has lost power. We lost it from 8-2 yesterday, but that's wasn't bad at all. We were most concerned for our parrots who are used to tropical weather. :)

I'm so thankful we have gas cooking too, so when the power does go out, we can still cook! We are fairly well prepared except for keeping the parrots warm.

Everybody stay warm and safe! And keep up with those gorgeous duck and chicky pictures!
 
Einie is my son's little polish pullet. We have a few "pets" that are named. Meat birds, spare roos, bb poults...no names. Most of the layer flock & my son's "poof heads"...named. The pair of geese & my 4 little call hens...named. The 6 breeder turkeys...named. The 7 ancona ducks I can't tell apart...The 7 Dwarves...lol

I know most of you have trees but OMG gorgeous this morning!!

how beautiful iced up trees are when the morning sun hits them,... Images DO NOT do the scene here justice not even close!!! IT was AMAZINGLY beautiful yet again!



 
Did a quick walk around this morning. Looks like I have some firewood for next year. A lot of my huge pines took major damage. No harm, but all my tractor paths are blocked and pine branches aren't good for anything but brush piles. At least no major damage I see.
If anyone near 17552 needs to borrow a generator, ask.I know a lot of people are still without power.
