Oh now that is awesome! It drives me nuts when they try to tell you how many you have to buy.

I could never figure out why feedstores have a minimum number of chicks you can buy. I mean, it's not like they have to pack them for shipping or anything.

If I've already got ten birds at home and only want two more to add to the existing flock what the heck do I want three or four extras for to meet their minimum? Silly people!

I think it is supposed to discourage people who want to buy them as Easter gifts or "pets" for non-farm children. To keep people from getting them when they are little, fuzzy and cute ~ then dumping them when they grow up to be poop machines that take daily work.

Yeah I can see this. Especially since the chain feedstores get them right before Easter and are done with supplying them by summertime. I'd swear they ARE in fact capitalizing on impulse Easter Chick buying for this reason. So what happens is, they'll sell them a minimum of five chicks AND a half arsed prefab chicken coop and too small run to go with their "Easter Chicks" My silly sister-in-law was one who did it a few years back. Went in for dog food came out with $200 worth of chicks and poorly made matchstick chicken coop. Within 2 months all chicks were dead because she had NO idea what she was doing. I didn't realize until after the fact or I'd have stepped in and done something. Makes me a bit hesitant to buy off TSC this spring even though I only want to add 2 more birds to my flock and don't want to have to order and end up with fifteen to twenty extra chickens I don't need because of minimum orders for shipping.

The only place I know of that supplies chicks all summer long and is not blatantly preying on the "Easter Chick" thing is Country Junction down in Lehighton. They hatch in the spring and have chicks to young pullets all summer long. I'd gotten my current laying hens there this past fall and they were my first and all came from the same place so I wasn't too worried about disease.
This year if I DO get 2 more pullets down there though, I will quarantine them for a couple of months before adding them to the existing flock. Just to be safe.

Hello. I have 2 SS. They are my favorite. The one went broody 3x last year. We got lucky. We didn't lose power to anything. Our problem was the icy driveway getting to the barn to feed the livestock. It's melted some so it's a little better. The chickens are patiently waiting to be left out to free range again.

I know when I bought my chicks two years ago there were moms and grandmas buying chicks for their kids and not really buying feed or anything else for them. If you look on Craigs list after a fews months I notice there are chickens showing up that people didn't want.

GM folks:

Power is still out and I am on a generator and wood stove insert...Hope others are doing better than I.

Most places I know have a min on how many chicks you can to keep people from buying solo's...

Keep warm!!!

My chicken breeds are on my profile page. I want to cut my flock in half to make way for turkeys. My flock number is 28, with one (EE) rooster that needs to go. All are a year or under.
