Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Thank heavens. I was having a panic attack. Wonder if that was the year when we had just moved in here and the snow was half way up the first floor windows? It was too deep to plow out the driveway and we had to get someone to come in with a backhoe three days later. When we could finally drive out, the pile of snow lining each side of the driveway was as high as the car.

They are saying on the news that there is still 892 homes or businesses with no power in the Susquehanna valley. Omg, what are these poor people going to do if this other storm gets here first!?

That would be Meyer Hatchery. Their birds are usually pretty healthy. I order from them often. I have a friend who lives about 20 minutes from them. She goes in & gets surplus chicks right from the store part of the facility for a pretty good discount. Then I meet up with her to get my shsre of the birds so we don't have to worry about shipping stress & nasty weather conditions.
I believe the post said they could/would lay for about a year...If I read that right.....I was hoping they would lay longer than that, but no matter, I'll keep them as long as I can.

Ahhhh... but I have a limit... *tear*

My annoying golden sebright in my avatar went to his new home today. He has 8 RIR hens all to himself. We introduced them to eachother when I got there, and he had never seen that many girls in his life. And they were all in one place. And there was no rooster in sight. That meant they were for him. He couldn't believe his good fortune. He immediately puffed out his chest and started dancing for them, and they were squatting up a storm. He loved that too. If he tried to pull that with my hens they quickly would put him back in his place. Another good thing is he'll have 8 hefty girls to snuggle and stay warm with on the cold nights.

The coop was also bigger than ours, and all of the birds free range when there's not a lot of snow on the ground. So that means that the rooster also gets to "own" some guinea hens. But he didn't see them yet because they were in their coop.

When I left he was smack dab in the middle of his new harem, just lovin it..

Won't miss him one bit.

He sure was pretty though...hope he likes his new harem :)

Saw this and my eyes started to well up. Dang! This weather is really getting to me.

We are have a 6 hour car drive on Thursday....how is this going to work!?
I know the feeling. And we're not even too far off the beaten path here. Every time I hear about more snow I literally want to sit down and cry. This winter has been a bit overwhelming.
I blame it on me getting chickens finally after 16 yrs of gently nudging DH in that direction. The cold is relentless and all these storms... one right after the other. And the darkness. It feels like somebody's stuffed me into a big black bag that I can't get out of no matter where I go. Every year it seems to bother me more and more as I'm getting older. I have officially HAD it with winter.
I just take comfort in the fact that it's light out by 6:30 this morning and we'll continue to see more and more of the sun. Spring really is just around the corner. It's my light at the end of this cold dark tunnel this year.

@ dheltzel, that little Silkie roo is adorable! Good luck finding him a good home. I don't blame you for wanting him to go to someone you at least know. All the more reason I can not wait for Spring or at least warmer weather. I've gotta get my coop and run extended. All the while we were building last Spring I had this nagging feeling in my gut that we should go bigger. But as usual I didn't listen to my gut and speak up. And now here we are with a coop designed for 5 chickens but big enough for 10 and me wanting 15. XD And DH grumbling that if I'd wanted it bigger why didn't I just say something in the first place. You'd think I'd learn after all these years...

I seems like I am in the minority, but I'm greatly enjoying this winter weather. I think of all the gardeners, that will have a substantially less number of harmful bugs and diseases in their gardens (I am also a gardener). I think in the long run this hard winter will benefit us more than we can imagine. It might be difficult to deal with it now, but I strongly believe it will leave us with a lot of positive side effects in this next year. Especially for the gardeners.
I felt it was getting to the point of an almost impossibility of trying to raise good healthy vegetables without the need to use a lot of pesticides and fungicides to keep the plants producing well, so in spite of this hard winter I am very glad we are getting what we're getting. This extended cold weather will kill off a lot of the bugs that our mild winters allowed to live, obviously it won't kill them all but it will weed out a lot of them (the strong survive

). I'm not glad that we struggle with a hard winter, but like I said, I am glad for this extended cold weather. With my job I work outside in it most days. If it's 10 degrees or less, and/or windy we will wait until 10 am to go to work, but if it's 10 and above we'll be out there working. This morning we have 3 degrees, we will go to the job at 9 and work and it's outside too. I look at my situation and make the best of it, and it works. I don't intend to offend anyone but I am really enjoying this weather.

This and I DO understand and appreciate that we NEED a lot of snow during the winter to then melt off slowly in spring, seep into the ground and keep us out of a drought situation within a few months time. I know we need snow in winter like we need rain the rest of the year to keep things in balance. It just seems really long this year though. Probably because we have been spoiled by so many mild winters. Doesn't make me any more eager to go out in it this afternoon to go to work again though. Or any more eager to have to shovel through another storm so close on top of the last three on Thursday and Friday this week D:
