Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

its a nasty mess and people are not aware of it and stuck all over and tons of closures and accidents. school busses flipped and some stuck along the roads filled with kids for fear of moving onward...

I hope everyone stays safe

I will add, that I am a bit po'd with the school and not sending out a bulk tele call about if kids are safe at school now! They call about the stupidest stuff, why not something like the safety of the kids!!! feeling irrtated with them and calling them to voice my opionion.

7 busses are not at school at Conrad Weiser, our elem area school got them there safe. praying this heat wave comes faster than it is!!!

Dont you love WEATHER updates!!

RADAR UPDATE 10:20am: the back edge of the precipitation is now east of Harrisburg... and will continue moving to the east over the next couple of hours. The temperature rise will coincide with the end of the precipitation most likely. So after it ends, conditions will improve. Until then, Mother Nature has thrown the kitchen sink at us. Heavy rain, heavy freezing rain, heavy sleet, heavy snow, thunder and lightning... lions, tigers and bears... expect this to continue, and continue to move across New Jersey ending from west to east between 11am and 1pm this afternoon.

At least the person writing the updates has a bit of a sense of humor! Though the 'east/west' thing can get a bit confusing to folks not good with directions you gotta appreciate their attempt to make it a more enjoyable read when it is full of bad news...

Annie:

I use pine shaving for brood and coop....I also think Pickering has a good price on it...their bag is 3.25 cubic feet while alot of other pet stores are 2.5......my two cents....

Thanks Stake, you have never steered me wrong!

And on a totally unrelated note.  Has anybody noticed what it's doing outside suddenly?

I could cry!
When I woke up this morning it felt like Spring was in the air.  I just knew today was going to be the day all the snow melted away.

And now it's sleeting and raining.  D:

At least we don't have to shovel sleet and rain! :D

Give em hell Sally!!!

I second that!

Lol I agree. A sense of humor is a must!

So how do you define rare? I used the "commercial hatchery test", because it seemed easiest. By that measure BCM are at least not common, blue ones even less so, and I can't think of a single hatchery anywhere with Golden Cuckoo Marans. Please let me know if you've seen them!

How do the swaps work with NPIP and general biosecurity? Is PA fairly liberal about that? I think private sales (like through CL) are mostly ignored, but well advertised swap meet might attract the wrong sort of attention from someone. Fortunately, fish are still very loosely regulated, because they are not a food item (in the pet store sense) and the pet industry has a huge lobby in DC dedicated to the unregulated flow of goods, including a lot of potentially dangerous animals. I've heard that the state of PA has bans on many pets (I don't really want to know what I can't have - just makes me want it), but apparently can't enforce them because the money is in the shops and they only sell supplies if people have those pets.

I know they have swaps in MD and they regulate everything down there, so it's certainly feasible for operations that already do NPIP, but that's impractical for mostly free-ranging poultry on a small dairy farm (I remember those discussion when Sally was getting certified, way too much hassle for me)

Yeah, everybody has there own ratings of things....If you are interested in Blue Copper Marans, you might google Bev Davis. From what I can gather she's a leading breeder in the US. I also checked the US Marans Club, they noted the Blue Copper standards were "Proposed". That makes them more rare because folks who show might not breed them...I did read somewhere a while back blues are created by mating a wheaten with a black (forget if it matter who the roo is)

I would suggest that anything listed on mypetchickens aren't rare, maybe semi-rare....I've found that if you google a breed, and only two or three boutique hatcheries are listed, its rare....or just about anything that Greenfire lists is usually rare....

One thing different about breeding dogs VS breed chickens,,,,is that there are registered AKC pooches and mixed breeds...in chickens there is no formal process and folks are always mixing and changing colors or combs, egg size and color, etc.... if you are interested in the genetics, PM me, I have a handful of good links..(though I usually glaze over 1/2 way through)..
