Fisherlady, Yes! Saw it on FB, LOVE it! My son's goat is in season and the brakes are shot on my car, so I can't get her to the breeder, and ya know....these things don't wait. It's now or never. Well....I could wait until next time, but that puts everything off. Arrrrrgh!

I can see the Icelandics but marans and rhodebars are readily found no? what do I know, perhaps I will do ads again if I have that many left over. I really dont have room to keep them for months and months and sell them for more. Nor would I eat them on purpose lol

I suppose it depends a lot on how you define a "normal breed". If more than one commercial hatchery offers them, I think most would agree that's a normal breed. I lot of hatcheries do Maran's, but most only cuckoo, so in my opinion BCM's are on the fence, and Blue CM's are certainly not normal. No hatcheries offer Rhodebars or Breese that I'm aware of, and Icelandics are only available from Sandhill (not sure if I count them as a commercial hatchery). Perhaps some hatchery has Cuckoo OEG's, I don't follow those very closely, but I suspect they aren't "normal" either. At least one commercial hatchery lists CCL's for sale, but everyone is with you on them. My point is just that there are non-normal chickens for sale on CL. The fact they are there on occasion, but not regularly, make yours likely to get at least some attention. I might be wrong, but I hope I'm right and when you post on CL, you get a lot of interest.

I wish we could do a poultry auction like the fish and garden clubs do auctions. I know there are livestock auctions, but they are a "last resort", IMO. A good auction is educational and not just a "dumping ground". The biosecurity implications make it too daunting to even think about.

Has anyone got chicks at Pickering Valley Feed? Love to hear the results. All my chicks are doing well, but we lost a few of the leghorns in the first few weeks, and I was looking to kinda fill in the ranks a bit, try some different breeds?

Got some last year. Out of the 3 Langshans we picked up, only one remains, but that's the fault of the local predators, and me. Pickering's stock was in excellent condition, and those birds were happy and healthy right up until the day they were picked off.

We got some there last spring as well. All chicks were healthy and thriving and continue to do so. The staff is very friendly and helpful as well. Each year they get some different varieties to pick from, which is a nice bonus.

I'm getting my five chickies here next week supposedly. I feel so unprepared even for all my studying and reading. Thanks for the input on Pickering Valley. I would have never heard of it except from you guys here. I am really excited for it! . e


I definitely think spring is around the corner, I feel like I hear birds chirping a lot more recently. Anyone else notice that? I feel like my dog is even bouncing off the walls (more than usual). In the salon I used to work at we had "the February Phenomenon" very year. People would come in and want a drastically different style or color. We think it was just because people are bored and cold and ready for spring this time of year and need a change. And it's usually been about 6 weeks from Christmas when they last did any kind of special style.

Back to Chickening.... What is everyone's preferred bedding for new day old chicks?

I think it's a fun day, and I'm not just saying that because I'm the main auctioneer

. If anyone from here comes by, please come find me, I'd love to meet you in person. I guarantee you'll see fish you never saw before in your life. Lots of rare and unusual stuff, most of it ridiculously cheap compared to pet shops.
If you are interested at all in tropical fish, it is not to be missed.

I've only had 3 batches of chicks in recent memory. Used pine shavings each time.

Though this last time in the fall I did try sand. They didn't seem to be able to find their food though so I switched back to pine shavings. Silly things!


Speaking of Spring, I've got the fever bad. I want my flowers! And my chickens frolicking in the grass!

Went down to Country Junction on Sunday just because I haven't been there since before Christmas. And I haven't been there in the Springtime since before it burned down a few years back.

I remember how they used to have the big incubator in the middle of the pet department this time of year. They didn't though. And the "Barnyard" section is all closed off. I dunno if it's too early for them yet or what. They did have about a dozen chicks inside. Obvious poor quality Easter Egger mutts labeled Araucanas. This annoyed me a bit. They weren't even nice fluffy chicks like a good respectable Easter Egger should be. Let alone a darn Arucana! I wanted to give someone my opinion on the subject but figured the poor girl working in the pet center had no say really in their labeling.
