My bator sat empty too long & these jumped in all on their own.
3 polish
7 turkey
7 ancona
9 rainbow layers
3 call (just to see if Grayson was doing his job before the polar vortex got him)

How many eggs have you hatched in the last year?

I thought I posted this yesterday, but may have dreamt it or something.

Did you ever notice how VetRx is made of Rosemary essential oil? I was going to grow rosemary, but when looking into herbs to grow for this year, I came across this.

That's why I'm dropping rosemary off the "Things to Grow" list. I'm growing oregano in its place.

Lemme see...
I run 3 bators full & sometumes double stacked from about March to October, 2 bators Feb & Nov, & 1 bator Dec & Jan. I had empty bators a total of about 3 weeks during 2 moves in Dec & Feb. Bators hold 50-70 eggs at a time depending on size without double stacking & about 100-110 double stacked. Of course, not everything hatches especially when I'm checking fertility or hatching shipped eggs. I've honestly lost count...lol
In the past year I've hatched:
Chickens
Ducks
Turkeys
Geese
Guineas
Coturnix
Tennessee Reds
Button quail

Sooo... can you gimme a rough estimate? Where do you brood 200 babies?

Has anyone got chicks at Pickering Valley Feed? Love to hear the results. All my chicks are doing well, but we lost a few of the leghorns in the first few weeks, and I was looking to kinda fill in the ranks a bit, try some different breeds?

Chippy, last year I used an old wardrobe laid on it's back with the door removed. It was 3x5 & about 2 1/2 ft deep laying down. I think I maxed at 250 chicks under 2 weeks old in it at 1 point in time. Most of my babies are sold in the first week & very few remain after 3 weeks. Ones I want to grow out for myself get tagged & remain in the brooder.
Water babies go to my outside brooder at 2-3 days old when possible. It's 3x4, wire bottomed & stands on 18 inch legs. It has a 3x1.5 lamp area that is enclosed all but the wire bottom. The rest is open most of the way around & is mostly wire. The wire is 1/4 inch rabbit wire. Access door into the open section is big enough to lean in to catch babies.

The current batch of babies will be using small wading pools until I get a new indoor brooder built in a few weeks. Thinking maybe I'll make it 1/8 inch wire with a linoleum lined dropping pan underneath to avoid shaving messes & make it so it can just be hosed down between broods. If I line the side walls with tile it can be wiped down easily. I'll put a hinged lid over the top for easy access & probably use natural branch perches.

Why not do both? Oregano is way easier to grows and comes back reliably every year. It's simple to grow from seeds, whereas rosemary is a lot tricker to get going from seed, so most people buy plants every spring.

That said, while I like the smell of oregano, rosemary is my very favorite. It's like catnip for humans . . .
