HAHA  I also had some CCL Brahma and WFS jump in my other styro!! ha ha ha!!   I have four hatch dates now, BUT LOCKDOWN of my big order of CCL and BRAHMA! yay!!  MAY GOD BE WITH THEM BLUE BOOGERS!!  I have a feeling I set way to many brahma for the order, I am still in a learning curve with this sales stuff!!  How many extras do you send Silkie?

Actually most of my live sales are pick-up or swap meet, so don't ship live chicks very often. If I DO ship day olds or very young babies, I do exactly what the hatcheries do. I toss in spare roos as packing peanuts & I warn the customers of that fact. If I'm sending straight run & haven't sexed the babies I will toss in a couple extras if I have them available.

gotcha! I have too many to just add a few extra ha ha ha, I will end up keeping them and checking with the local pick up list I guess. I hate local pick ups without a deposit, its like CL, half the time the person doesnt call or show up, pure frustration, thats why I had to have the deposit policy in effect.... that annoys me, its called communication, its not difficult! I had three people with "car issues" in December alone! ha ha ha, you and me both! LOL

I don't take special orders when I hatch. I just set what I want/have available. If I have more hatch than I want for myself I put an ad on craigslist or take them to the next swap meet. I don't hold birds for people unless they are being shipped & are already paid for. All bird sales are first come, first serve. I tell everyone that. I figure if they want them they will come running to get them before someone else does...lol I actually have trouble keeping enough birds to keep up with sales most of the time & have people who call several times a week to see if what they want has hatched yet. Some of them I put on a call back list if I know they are serious or have gotten birds & eggs from me before & want more.

I think Silkie has a good plan. Post on craigslist, first come/first serve. If someone desperately wants them, they might convince you to hold them or send you payment electronically, otherwise they are up for grabs.

I stalk CL regularly looking for deals, and I've found a few. I'm pretty sure a lot of people do. I bet you'll do better than you think if the prices are reasonable, and if they are surplus and you want to unload them quick, then you can afford to sell them cheaply. If you want a better price, you might end up feeding them for a few weeks until you find a buyer, but probably a lot of the "extra" money will end up being spent to feed them.

If I had normal breeds CL would work, I havent found CL to work to my advantage, most dont even know what breeds they are looking at and then the price throws them lol Not that I am expensive by any means, I am half or less of what others are charging.

Right now on CL there are Copper Marans, Icelandics, and 3 different people selling Rhodebars for various prices. Also, black jap bantams, cuckoo OE bantams and silkies (of course). None of those are "normal" (well, some might consider silkies normal, but nothing that looks that bizarre is normal). A bit further afield finds NN's, Breese and red laced blue wyndottes (for $75!!).

Maybe they aren't selling well, but it only takes one person that wants them, and you don't have to pay to list them and see what sticks. Personally, I'd pay 2x the going rate if I don't have to drive far or have them shipped.

Wow, I just realized I know way more about the rare chickens on CL than anyone really should . . .

Quote: I can see the Icelandics but marans and rhodebars are readily found no? what do I know, perhaps I will do ads again if I have that many left over. I really dont have room to keep them for months and months and sell them for more. Nor would I eat them on purpose lol

Thank you!

Chippy, last year I used an old wardrobe laid on it's back with the door removed. It was 3x5 & about 2 1/2 ft deep laying down. I think I maxed at 250 chicks under 2 weeks old in it at 1 point in time. Most of my babies are sold in the first week & very few remain after 3 weeks. Ones I want to grow out for myself get tagged & remain in the brooder.
Water babies go to my outside brooder at 2-3 days old when possible. It's 3x4, wire bottomed & stands on 18 inch legs. It has a 3x1.5 lamp area that is enclosed all but the wire bottom. The rest is open most of the way around & is mostly wire. The wire is 1/4 inch rabbit wire. Access door into the open section is big enough to lean in to catch babies.

The current batch of babies will be using small wading pools until I get a new indoor brooder built in a few weeks. Thinking maybe I'll make it 1/8 inch wire with a linoleum lined dropping pan underneath to avoid shaving messes & make it so it can just be hosed down between broods. If I line the side walls with tile it can be wiped down easily. I'll put a hinged lid over the top for easy access & probably use natural branch perches.

Wooooooah. *round of applause* That's awesome!!!

I thought I posted this yesterday, but may have dreamt it or something.

Did you ever notice how VetRx is made of Rosemary essential oil? I was going to grow rosemary, but when looking into herbs to grow for this year, I came across this.

http://www.organicfacts.net/health-...health-benefits-of-oregano-essential-oil.html

That's why I'm dropping rosemary off the "Things to Grow" list. I'm growing oregano in its place.

Why not do both? Oregano is way easier to grows and comes back reliably every year. It's simple to grow from seeds, whereas rosemary is a lot tricker to get going from seed, so most people buy plants every spring.

That said, while I like the smell of oregano, rosemary is my very favorite. It's like catnip for humans . . .

I would grow both, but I have no idea how I'm gonna grow the things I am now!!! Anything I can drop without it hurting, I am, because I'll have literally no room.
