Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Thank you.
Well I have four hens two ducks. I have had my flock for a year.
Im interested in mealworms, maybe a female duck and possibly a cockerel.
I'm currently waiting for my duck to start laying.

I love my ducks. They are Pekin and should be laying soon.
I never personally saw the drake mount my female...
Not sure my husband will let me have more than one cockerel. I had to beg for what I have now. Lol

Question if anyone might know:

I see people talk about swaps at tsc. Why do some do this and others don'tl I've asked at mine and they indicated they aren't permitted.
Just wondering.
wondered this myself, I would do a monthly swap if they had them local

Thought about this also,,,then I read an article about maggots having a high rate of e coli,,,so I brushed it aside an never looked into it again..

E. coli is the normal fecal bacteria, it's everywhere. When they test wells for "fecal coliforms", they are testing that the number are not "too high", but some is pretty much expected. Many strains are harmless, they just join it with the ones already living in your intestines. But some strains are more dangerous. The same can be said for Salmonella. It's present everywhere, including every chicken bought in every supermarket. A few, your body can handle just fine, but some strains are far more virulent than others and those are the ones you body can't handle as easily.

Good hygiene for anything you put in your mouth is essential of course, but you're probably gonna ingest both E. coli and Salmonella every day. So are the chickens.

I bet the maggots with a lot of E. coli are those growing in manure, the ones on rotting meat are probably "cleaner", if that makes any sense. Still, if your chickens are on dirt, they probably encounter all sorts of E. coli and fight it off like we do.

I'm a lot more wary of viruses like Marek's than of bacteria, though there are many rather benign and some very lethal versions of both.

Old fishing trick for chumming: buy a can of dog food, punch some holes in the bottom. Hang over stream. Wait. The flies will do the rest themselves.
Should work over a chicken run.

I like this idea! Thanks for the tip, we will have to try it!

Most likely is a local ordinance regarding animal sales or outdoor gatherings, probably require special permits or applications for exemptions to be done... other possibility is insurance restrictions of the property owner (since most storefronts are on rented 'mall' type areas, or on land actually owned by a property development company )

That does make sense dheltzel,,,,,,,,would you know what the numbers are that they consider in excess,,,,and I am wondering if those numbers would not be different for everybody, considering how much exposure each person has...and this goes back to the discussion of all the anti bacterial soaps,,,,are you not limiting yourself to exposure if you are killing all bacteria.....i would think that exposure is a good thing to a point...

not to argue your point of view....I was just thinking out loud

I wasn't saying I wouldn't try the maggots, I just never went any farther than that one article....gotta say that the maggots I find a little gross..

biosecurity is important, everyone has to decide what level to practice,,,,,it is unfortunate that some problems will still get thru
