so... People in Pennsylvania, has anyone had any luck with their ducks laying yet? Every day I go out in the morning and check, and still no egg....?

Mine are laying, and breeding like crazy.

For me it is to add size and good temperment to meat projects.....both cornish and plymouth rock are known to be a little mean, hoping to bring in something else

If I were raising meat birds, I'd want them mean. The meaner the better, then I'd feel no remorse about ending them.

I think maybe that's why broilers grow into such ugly birds, so the people paid to process them think they are doing the world a service. The last roo I killed was suffering from a bad winter and it was a mercy (in my opinion, not his). But he was also one of the big, ugly sex links still roaming the farm. My goal is to catch and remove all of those this spring.

I'm about 2 1/2 hrs directly west of Pittsburgh & my anconas & calls have been laying for about a month now. We didn't get that huge snow that some of you got but we've had temps of -35°F & only 2 days so far this winter that we could even see the ground.

First use sledge and pick to break away 6 inches of ice and hard snow. Next use Jack hammer to break in to frozen ground. take all dirt in house to thaw for three days. Set post. Replace dirt. Allow to freeze overnight.
Seriously, I don't remember what ground looks like. Snow hasn't even totally melted off my carport!

we spent a day with the metal spade shovel chopping through about a foot of snow and ice to get to the ground lol. We tried the sledge hammer thing, too many roots and rocks and I'd LOVE to have a jack hammer to tear it all up lol. Thankfully, we only have two to go. This morning DH told me not to worry about killing myself trying to get those holes done today. He said he'd work on getting another done tonight after work. We'll see what happens. I'm not good at doing what I'm told

This isn't meant to be rude, but what's the big deal about dorkings? What makes them such a hot item?

That rooster is GORGEOUS, MLH.

There are many different reasons people like Dorkings. They are reported to be an excellent tasting meat bird (haven't tried this yet). They're gorgeous. They are white egg layers. So with meat and eggs, good multi-purpose bird. I am also interested in keeping endangered/heritage birds. Dorkings are a very old breed thought to have originated in Italy during the time of the Roman Empire. They were then brought to Britain during the Roman Conquest (55-54 BC), making them one of the oldest English breeds. Have I mentioned they're gorgeous? LOL. My birds are not an SOP color, however a few people are working to get the Red Pyle color accepted into the standard. I had been thinking about getting Dorkings for a while when I was at a show and saw my rooster. It was love at first sight. So, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it, LOL.

Husband for rent, cheaply....he will even go willingly if your gonna feed him.

I must be *** backward......i seem to be the only one who had the farm name first.....wingstone farms has been the name since back when hubby had pigs,,,,he called it that because the place is full of pigeons and sparrows and the fields really do grow stones, he picks up a wagon load every spring.....and you guys thought wingstone was just my username....

- If you do grow the field peas, let me know. I would love to get some!
- I love it when labor is cheap like that. I wish everyone I knew would work for food and maybe a few bucks for gas! Usually when I have stupid projects that require 2-3 extras hands (OH's friends), I plan a huge cookout or some sort of huge meal. After I put $50-80 into the meal they want paid too! It gets costly to have "friends" help.
- I started thinking about a name in the first year. Array of Feathers has always been a contender. When we moved here, since we are on a hill and it's windy as heck, Windswept Feathers became and option. I still preferred Array after all these years.

Changed their bedding today from towels to pine shavings. Aside from Ginger not wanting to step in it at first (she stayed on top of the wood for a little bit lol) they're loving it now. They keep running all over the place and scratching and digging like crazy
