My guess would be red star & black star (sex-linked production birds). I don't se any black in the red's tail that would indicate rir.

If I were raising meat birds, I'd want them mean. The meaner the better, then I'd feel no remorse about ending them. I think maybe that's why broilers grow into such ugly birds, so the people paid to process them think they are doing the world a service. The last roo I killed was suffering from a bad winter and it was a mercy (in my opinion, not his). But he was also one of the big, ugly sex links still roaming the farm. My goal is to catch and remove all of those this spring.

My grandkids are often around on the weekends,,, mean birds can become a problem quickly,,,,,I want the kids to like the birds not fear them

My kids help with bird chores & are in my pens daily. Any mean birds get a hasty 1 way ticket to Camp Freezer.
 
Still researching the field peas,,,,could use some help....I am not very good with the technical parts of research.....

I am finding conflicting articles on time to plant,,,,,a fall planting would work great, but just not sure....

I would need to present this to hubby as fields are his area.....

how much would I need to plant if I fed daily and enough to sell some...

which brings up another point, how well would that fit into my feeding program......most of the year I ferment, my mix is usually half grower pellet, a quarter wheat, a quarter barley, with corn used as scratch as long as the weather is not to hot....a little concerned where the peas would fit in, I know all of the birds like my garden peas, it is a challenge to keep them out of there...


what about harvest, only way I could get away with a combine doing this, is if they were allready coming for another crop.....Hubby may not go get a combine just for peas, so no...


field crops are not my territory,,,hubby grows crops, I grow meat..

- I love it when labor is cheap like that.  I wish everyone I knew would work for food and maybe a few bucks for gas!  Usually when I have stupid projects that require 2-3 extras hands (OH's friends), I plan a huge cookout or some sort of huge meal.  After I put $50-80 into the meal they want paid too!  It gets costly to have "friends" help.

I've been trying to think of a name for my place for awhile now. You gave me an idea...Windy Acres. Will toss that around in my head for awhile. We also live on top of a hill and if its not nailed down its gone.
 
Who has Heritage RIR in North East? Any suggestions? My dogs just got my last RIR

this is an article on feeding grains....

in it it talks about feeding milk,,,,I thought poultry could not digest milk....

anyone have anything on this,,,I know lots of people feed yogurt.

you guys have me thinking about making my own feed again,,,,I get overwhelmed with all the choices and go right back to buying pellets, which is stupid since I have ascess to most grains....
