OK... I will keep looking then... I have seen dick's birds at his place and they are beautiful... seems to me someone else mentioned having them near Slippery Rock maybe, but I can't remember what thread it was I was reading a few months ago where it was mentioned. Let my tired brain think on it a bit and I may remember....

please excuse my mess, it has been a long cold winter and I have not done any cleaning yet

you can see in the background the old drum mixer that was used for mixing hog feed,,,if I were to mix large amounts of grains and store in cans, how would I keep the heavier grains from sinking to the bottom,,,and also how well do you think said grains would ferment without added pellets, the grains I add now are held in by the pellets, afraid with all grain the lighter stuff like wheat would just float...I also use whole corn, only because I have gone thru the hassle of grinding it and found the birds prefer whole..

I am thinking I would have to add other supplements that would be powder like any suggestion on mixing them in.....now remember I ferment when weather permits and it does not freeze an hour after being put out...

with the hog feed we mixed once a week, I do not want to do that, I would want to mix atleast a couple months worth at a time..

just some of my thoughts, and any suggestion would be appreciated

I would like to get away from the every other week trip to the feed mill, but just do not know if that's possible

yep, looks like my living room and dining room....sans the drum....I think most grains will ferment pretty good....think its called 'mashing in'....lol

Hiya Guys!

I just figured I'd check in and say howdy. I wanted to give a bit of an update. I got some new birds off craigslist, and they are mingling well with my backyard flock. I picked up some EE's one of whom is a speckled olive egger!!!! Oh i am so excited! I haven't figured out which one of the new EE's it is yet, but they are just gorgeous gals! (I named them Sherlock and Watson--as they tend to be best gal pals)

Here, I'll show them off! Bright Blessings!!

You could fill your barrel 3/4th full of your whole grains and then only add a little bit more water than what covers them and as they absorb the water just add a little more as needed, that way there would be very little shifting of grains. I would imagine that when the grains have absorbed as much as they can, you'll have a full barrel of feed.
I'm looking forward to the smell of fermented feed again.

RIR are my most fav chickens, and the only ones I friend besides Harmony's serama.

I love the reds! I love BR as well, and am totally torn between them. I want one or the other but I think RIR.

Another big point is that I can keep them with the CCL because I can tell eggs apart. Blue vs Tan easy to spot

who is who. So its a win win for me as I dont need yet another coop! I sell hatching eggs from my layer pen, these mutt eggs sell well locally and most times I dont have breakfast to eat

. So the mutts are from the CCL over what hens I am down to, one loner BR and a light brahma the kids have befriended and I cant sell her. So I was already missing RIR.

I know I should control the dogs, but they are fenced in, the dumb chickens went to them

Has anyone got chicks at Pickering Valley Feed?  Love to hear the results.  All my chicks are doing well, but we lost a few of the leghorns in the first few weeks, and I was looking to kinda fill in the ranks a bit, try some different breeds?
I'm getting some there in a week heard lots of good things I guess I'll find out
