you worded that very well, and I agree that if you are gonna hatch, pass on the genes for the strong not the weak.........I am always hesitant to tell a newbie to let the chick go, it is for the best.
OMGAWD wing you have no idea some of the nasty messages I get when I suggest a cull and then even when asked how to cull it gets worse. I get so irritated and then to go so far as to message me? ughhhh A great example of why I dont help people anymore that post new help threads unless they come to me and ask! It shouldnt have to be that way, but I just cant figure out ppl, nor do I want to!

BARGAIN ALERT !!!

The TSC in Pottstown has older silkie bantam chicks for $1.00 each. They had about 30 of them when I was there an hour ago. The young ones are $2.99, but these, being older and (I guess) lacking some of the cuteness, are reduced for quick sale.

Anyone interested in hatching with broody hens, this is your chance, buy a bunch and raise them. Sell the excess males cheap to wingstone (just don't ask their fate if you grew attached to them). My silkies go broody a lot, and often co-brood like fisher's wyndottes. Silkie hens are (IMO) the ultimate sweet, pet chicken. Other people must agree because they are always in demand.

bring them silkie roosters on over, but he is right, please do not expect happily ever after...not sure what folks think I do with all the roosters..

with you on that one,,,,,,I can not tell you how many messages I get, can you please take my mean rooster, then they get upset when told what will happen to them,,,,I try to be honest and tell everyone that very few of those roosters will stay.

Chick question. Last night I turned their light out for bedtime and they seemed to handle it fine. I kept a small nightlight on for a little bit so they could find their place. Tonight, when I turned out the lights, it seems like chaos, everyone is upset and "protesting". Is this normal? Am I correct to just start keeping the light off? They are inside and we keep the heat no lower than 68. They are a month old and seem to be able to keep warm. They keep freaking out, and flapping around. Any suggestions from any of you night owls?

I think the problem was that all of the fat girls cant fit on the one roost and they were knocking each other off in order to get a spot. If only I had a night vision camera! :lau I will be making a new roost tonight.

I usually start turning it off during the day and get them slowly used to it before I do it at night.

Thanks! I had done that too!

Welcome!. Good eye on the Brahmas, Troyer.
Sounds like they're warm enough... Reminds me of my DD, first it's the light, then it's a drink of water, then just ONE More bedtime story...

Maybe some of that too..;)

Today is the chick's photo shoot :) I'll post pics later. My mom's friend is using them for her Easter Photo Sessions.

Vogue!

That's a shame . Don't shoot the messenger! I can see you just want to help! :hugs

IMHO, people lose perspective. It is a chicken, not your prized German Shepherd with AKC papers. I think what you are doing Wing is much kinder than those idiots who use them for cock fighting.

CC... have you decided what you are going to do with that pool yet ???

what are some others projects coming up.......It is always nice to get idea's from others

I checked into a new type of bird with the black skin (thanks dhetze ) I am on a waiting list and will probably not get any till next summer, so all black skin roosters are welcome to be dropped off..

I will also be seperating with a fence down thru the middle of the duck pen and a boar for the inside of the pen, scovies will get half the pen and the rest will house the east indies and hopefully they can live peacefully with the khaki campbells..any suggestions there....

meaties are getting a new area that we will plant pasture with,,,not completely figured out yet but they get half the corn crib that is currently being used for breeding pens, we will cut an opening to allow them outside,,,,this is an area that things like corn do not grow well so hubby has no problem giving up the space..

I am sure I am forgetting something, I always have projects going...

1 more time... I set some eggs to check fertility, does anyone want whatever hatches,,,, free, you just need to pick them up...I will not be adding anything except what is already ordered, we are keeping things simple till we find out what will happen with the property.....everything is being built on an easily movable plan, nothing will have any kind of foundation...

1 more question,,,,

Sandhill Poultry, I have been trying to get certain breeds for year's now and they are always sold out, I am told that the waiting list for some breeds can go out a few year's,,,,I do not mind paying for things up front but I think that is a little to far in advance.....anyone else encounter this with sandhill ? they do carry unique breeds though, what would you do???

Ok, this chicken math is amazing stuff. A year ago I said I wanted chickens and that 6 would be good. This year when I started purposing for chickens, 10 was the magic number. Two weeks ago, I said no more than 15. But today, I'm going to pick up 2 SLW pullets which brings me to 17 lol. This should be it though. Plus, I'm not keeping every roo i get. My goal was for a rainbow egg basket and I think this is now going to be accomplished lol. Our chicks:
4 EEs
2 Black Copper Marans
2 Blue Copper Marans
2 golden comets (I think)
2 silkies
2 random bantams
1 brahma/Marans cross
2 SLW
:) feeling very excited though not sure how Hubby will feel about all this. When he left for training we had 6. He'll be coming home to 17 lol

Did a double-take until I figured out you meant "board". I know you like your meat, but that would be quite a jump up in size.

chicken math is irrelevant, you never get the same answer twice
