also had an order put in today for pick up on wed... someone called and wants 10 dozen eggs for wed morning, I may have to hit CC up for eggs, not sure I can get the girls to cooperate on this, since it is gonna rain all week...

any suggestions,,,, maybe some music for them..

oh man...haha, this sounds really stupid..but, I really didn't even give bears a thought.

...we only live in one of the highest areas where bears are taken in season...
What does CABA stand for? ....going to try to find whatever "local" bee group is around this area...hope there is one close.

I have collected all of the air tools I could ever find a use for, and about wore out one chain saw so graduated to a 20" stihl... so the logical next thing was a backhoe! LOL. It is just a small John Deer, will eventually trade it on the next size up (used to use a bigger one quite a few years ago and notice the drop in hydraulic power a lot when doing heavy digging)
They cost less than a new car or truck, and are worth their weight in gold when moving things like gravel and rail road ties around! The RR ties weigh approx 250 lbs each, DH and I can pick them up easily enough, but carrying them any distance sucks!

I imagine she is referring to bears, which are common around the central and western Pa area.... so plan to bring coolers which you can place in vehicles overnight and ways to keep garbage and extra food stashed away so as not to attract attention.

I don't envy you folks trying to watch incubators on a large scale... we have a small one and it is nerve wracking!

DH and I broke down and borrowed an incubator... I picked up hatching eggs for 2 broodies on Thursday, the breeder was giving me some to replace some from February which never developed (I think they got too cold before collection, so no way for him to know). The breeder not only replaced the lost eggs, he gave me an extra dozen of a breed I have been wanting for years which he recently acquired beautiful stock for! I got to check out the new birds (Heritage White Rocks) and they are stunning! So I ended up with more eggs than our broodies could cover and there was no way I was throwing out any of these eggs!
Now we are just watching temps and wishing we would have another girl or two go broody! They have us spoiled, it is so much simpler to give them to a hen!

I'm hoping (praying) to have a few at least hatch... and should be able to get more eggs if needed now that his birds are settled and laying well. This will give me a decent start on White, Silver Pencil and Barred....

If these whites look anything at all like their parent stock I will be a happy lady.... big and stocky, nicely rounded... the hens were probably 8 pounds at least and the roos probably 10 or 11, though hard to get a good guestimate if you don't actually pick them up.
Once I get a trio at least of each I will make sure to get a few dozen pure eggs at least each year, hopefully be able to provide enough pure eggs for my broodies at least...
 
Well today was a rough one. Took all the older chicks outside today for some play time, and tonight I found my smallest silkie runt had passed, my daughter had just finally decided to name her Mini today (shes 3 and a mickey mouse fanatic.lol) It was so sad , i just am not having luck with my little runts. past 2 were silver partridge, and both died around the same age.I am just glad that her last day was a good day.
But to lighten the mood, which I desperately needed, I think my Holland doe Autumn is bred! This will be her first litter, which normally doesn't turn out well...but possible fuzzy babies in the next 4 weeks?? crossing my fingers! xxx! : )
