Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Anyone hear fromm Cc yet, he is most likely still cleaning up mud..

Glad to here no serious damage was done by the storm, I had to go the long way around for a day and went thru lots of straw trying to keep everyone dry, but considering what they got in other states, we did good.

I have a processing question....

I do not know where everyone is getting my number at, but we are getting regular calls to process for people..( not people on here ). Apparently there's more and more people raising their own meat , then realizing that they can not finish the job......just wondering what a good price would be to process, I hate the packaging part all, would it be reasonable to ask them to bring coolers that I could just put them in ice water and they finish the job....

Not complaining, word of mouth is the best kind of advertising, we now have more egg customers than eggs from word of mouth, ,
the lady we used to have process, she would put them in the bags but you had to supply the bags, and she put all the giblets in one bag, you had to sort what you wanted in each bag if you wanted them with the chickens, to be honest, don't remember what she charged, not much cause she was a friend, wasn't much, maybe a dollar per chicken, like i said, friend

I do not think skinning is any easier....
I

Not many places local that do poultry, most won't mess with them, thing is I am more than happy to show them how for free, I can not understand why some do not want to learn..
stomach problems

, sometimes i have problems eating what i raised if i get close to the bird, doesn't bother me to clean once the killing is done, bill does that, i do everything else, well, i do have a whizbang now, but the cleaning of the insides

Our phone numbers are kept on that dry erase board that hangs on the egg refrigerator, so anyone stopping for eggs would has it, then they run into someone asking for processing and we get a call....

If you get a chance can you get the details from your neighbor, I would think he might change more for duck, they are such a pain....

Hopefully I'll see them this weekend. They, like everyone, are busy with garden, animals, general sorting work, oh, and a baby due this week. And she was out gardening last weekend!
@wingstone
If you didn't get my message, I got potatoes for you, a lot of potatoes, not sure what kinds. I'll bring them over Saturday when I come for the quail.

I got a vacuum bag sealer from someone my hubby did work for. We get the refill bags on ebay pretty cheap. We did 80 birds the first year with one box of refills. We just did the birds whole. The next time we ordered more bags and did 50 birds, we pieced them out wings, thighs, legs, breasts and put them in sealer bags and we still have some bags left for the next time. The meat seems to be holding up well in the freezer. Haven't had any freezer burned chicken.
what kind of vacuum bag sealer is it? i usually buy the 2 gallon freezer zip lock but not quite pleased with it. since we want to raise our own birds, it might help to have a bag sealer

It is the disconnect thing again... folks don't want to know where there food comes from... they just want it to appear all neat and clean and easy like on the table... willingness to get hands dirty is becoming a rarer and rarer thing!
Don't feel guilty about charging a premium price... if folks aren't willing to learn or get their own hands dirty then they can pay for expecting someone else to do the dirty work.

Offering back the 'giblets' can be done on a 'per bird' basis, or per order, or per separated giblet type (some folks just want the livers or hearts)... but I wouldn't pack them per individual bird, they get them in a gallon bag and deal with it themselves!

I guess I should clarify... some folks are willing to get their hands dirty and don't have the time due to jobs and such, so they are willing to pay the higher price for the end result of having chicken done for them that they know was raised right. I just have gotten a bit jaded from being exposed to the wrong folks too many times lately.

We have a Food Saver... it has been worth it's weight in gold for fish and chicken in particular... but I also do meatballs, lasagna and pigs in the blankets by the roaster full, and cookies 10 or 20 dozen at a time and it allows me to cook in bulk and save in serving sizes, which is awesome!

Ours is an upright model with a 'gentle' option (which is good on numerous things)... it is a more expensive model but we have used it literally a thousand times and it still works without fail.

Anyone else suffer damage from the storm? Our road is closed also the bridge on the main road in and out of town is shot, I'll be driving the long way around for some time to come.

My brooders were soaked through yesterday, so I cleaned them out and put dry bedding, half my garden washed away, but no serious damage to our home or property.
oh no! we didnt get anything last night!

I'm here!
The creek stayed mostly in the banks, the basement water stayed one inch below the furnace, all is good!

I'm sorry for those who were in the path of the worst flooding.

good!

Need to do some research on the vacuum bags and just plain packaging, most of the people I deal with now are happy with the 2 gallon ziploc bags that I gt online, last order a few of them pitched in some cash to get good freezer quality bags....

May need to upgrade for the general public, myself, I always felt that those shrink wrapped things in the grocery store might be hiding something since most are not a Clear color
now she is gonna have me rethinking anything in plastic HA HA HA

Quote: Hey you two, I only got so far and didnt clean it up yet, but the bags discussion from the processing thread I did pull so I could grab info quick...... scroll down to see the chickens pic in the bag, links are there from what everyone suggested at the time https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/processing-day-support-group-summary-of-thread

I have a vacuum sealer I picked up at Kmart. I think it is a Kenmore brand. Not sure if a whole chicken would fit in those bags. Never tried. Use it mostly for the managers special meat from grocery store. I but bulk and split it up since I'm not a "family" but family size packages save so much money.

Also great for freezing veggies since you can make flat packages that stack well in the freezer. Remember, I package a out of my veggies in one and two cup portions.
I like the gentle or wet feature. Also works for dry goods in mason jars, like rice and grains, with the hose attachment.

Odd man out here...
I gave my vacuum sealer to my daughter, I really did not like it..

Come to think of it my daughter ends up with way to much of my stuff,,, remember the dehydrator, she borrowed it, I have not seen it since...

Interested in those shrink wrapped bags, I would have to charge extra for those though, wonder if people would prefer that.
