Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I'm sorry for your damage. We lost 3 chickens yesterday, I can't say it was due to the weather, but it's still very discouraging to have an animal die under your care, and 3 in one day is worse. I'm hoping that is all, if more chicks die today I'm not sure what I'll do.

And I had a newly hatched chick drown this week. Still kicking myself over that one too.

I did have some fun giving the chicks a chopped up hard boiled egg. Some figured it out and the others saw it and much activity ensued.

Sorry for your loss! :(

We have a Food Saver... it has been worth it's weight in gold for fish and chicken in particular... but I also do meatballs, lasagna and pigs in the blankets by the roaster full, and cookies 10 or 20 dozen at a time and it allows me to cook in bulk and save in serving sizes, which is awesome!

Ours is an upright model with a 'gentle' option (which is good on numerous things)... it is a more expensive model but we have used it literally a thousand times and it still works without fail.

I found my foodsaver at the local thrift store for $5.00, and I get the rolls of bags of of ebay. Love it and use it a lot. My husband loves yonanas (soft serve made entirely from frozen bananas and fruit and we freeze individual portions of bananas for this purpose a lot.

The price sheet with options is a good idea. That way the customer does the parts they want done & you charge by how much work you do.
I just snagged 1 on e-bay that should be here tomorrow or Monday. I just used ziplock bags last year but didn't like them. I think the roll bags will work much better.

A price sheet where they can check off options and sign it at the bottom. :)

Hope you all weathered the storm alright!

Confession alert: my chickens were supposed to be outside last night for the first time, but I caved when I saw a a nasty set of thunderstorms on the way and all the stupid chickys (now 10-11 weeks old) were in a corner underneath the coop. Tonight is the night! I will throw them in and lock the door! My chickens are spoiled....

Just talked to hubby, and I have to agree with him (doesn't happen often). For this year we will keep it simple, .....he says he can easily construct a holding pen for up to a 24 hour drop off, must be away from my flocks, he is thinking mobile.....
Must provide enough coolers to hold birds and also bags if wanted, or I can put on ice in those coolers..........will call when finished and must be picked up with in a determined time...

He does not want to put any money in for things like bags till we see how it goes...

He is quoting $2 a bird sounds to high to me for just the process but he is figuring our time is worth that....I am gonna time the one's we do this weekend and see just how long each takes

He also thinks I should have something signed for those dropping off ahead of time, you just never know.

Thoughts, 2 cents here

Sounds like a good plan. Definitely get something signed, never know with people these days.

i agree with your husband, altho you're use to it, its alot of work for the average person, $2.00 sounds reasonable for what you're doing

Wow, relatives are strange, ran that past one that has no connection with farm life and they just confused me with more questions...
They wanted to know if they could go to roots and get a crate of chickens if I would process and piece them out...( first I thought everyone knows how to do that, but I guesses not ). What is the price for bird then....

I sometimes forget that the everyday life things to me are not common to others.

Just my two cents.
I wouldn't build a holding pen, make them drop them off in crates or cages with their contact information attached.

Maybe a mobile covered shelter to place the crates in, preferably close to your processing area, although that is close to the duck/meat pen and might require moving "the pile". Just a big tarp on a framework would work. Wouldn't even have to be very high.

Do everything to minimize your handling because that is time.

Still hate spell correct

x2... sounds like a good way to start, and yes, come up with a form to be signed with dates and number of birds and if they want livers or whatever back... I'm not sure if you have an ice maker or not, but you could always request they leave one or two bags (3 or 5 pounders?) in the cooler. You can store it in your own freezer and rotate them through. That could take some of the strain off of your refridgeration system. $2 is cheap for what you are doing.
