Almost out of the starter feed. They'll be 7 weeks old on Friday. Still give them starter or what should I get for them? They're loving the grass and bugs and stuff they can scratch for in the yard.

My 13 are all exactly the same i tried to name them all but i couldn't tell which was which so i just gave up ahah. My broody hasnt moved since monday, ive got food and water right beside her, but im not sure id shes eating or drinking anything, hmmmm :/

Awesome! The speed at which you work puts me to shame! I just finished a coop I started over a year ago (no exaggeration).

My next project is to build something the turkeys can hang out in until they get a little bigger. Currently we are keeping the in a pool in the basement at night -they made a jail break last night and pooped all over everything down there. Most of the stuff is my sister's so I wasn't too mad. During the day they are in the yard with no protection and no coop, I've got to get on this pronto.

Blarneyeggs was kind enough to send me 13 eggs for my friends classroom to hatch. They get white eggs from 4H but none of the students believed her when she told them eggs come in different sizes and colors. So far 4 of blarneys eggs hatched. 2 were lost due to cracking. The students are in awe! Thank you again! It has been such a wonderful experience for them. Here are a few pic that she sent me. Any guess on the breed?

Thanks for sharing the pics! Good to know they had an interesting hatch. Looks like those chicks hatched out of the beige eggs, which would be a BCMs covering Wyandotte hens. The Wyandottes are all laced, I hope those chicks develope some lacing.

Blarney- I don't want to sound too "duh", but I am reading correctly...black copper marans-over wyandottes, right? ..wow, should be very interesting!!! Do you have any of those running around your yard right now that you could get a pic of? The kids will really enjoy those chicks!! lots of fluffy love

did u have to train them to go in?  I threw cracked corn in the duck house and they went in.  but at first it was a pain.  I just wish they were more friendly and now so scared of us.

My duckies start out penned when they first go outside. The kids trained them to "go to bed" by going out & herding them into the box each night at 3-5 weeks old. They got so good that all the kids had to do was walk into the pen any time after about 5pm & the ducks would just head for the box. Now all we have to do is walk toward them & say "bedtime" & they head for their coop & into the shed to be locked up for the night. My 6 anconas & 2 buff geese are the only waterfowl I have free ranged & they stick pretty close to the pen & house. My broilers also free range, but they won't go where they can't see the feed bowls...lol The only time they go where they can't see their bowls is when they sneak in the garage to clean up any fod that got spilled near the fermenting buckets or to follow whoever picks up their bowls to fill them. Nothing like having 19 fat butts waddle after you with their wings out for balance because they are afraid they will miss a bite of food...lol

Personally, I stay with at least a 20% protein feed until close to point of lay.
Of course, I start with 24% and stay there for quite a while since my one breed is protein sensitive. I also do not use any medicated feed, since the same birds seem to have issues with it.

But that's just me. I also have quail and sometimes turkey, so I probably stay on the 20% more of the year than not. I just don't like keeping lots of different feeds on hand.

What breed is sensitive to the protein? I like to keep it high for my Orps, and had to get some really high feed for the turkeys. I'm also curious as to what breed of duck your neighbor has follow her, is it Pekin? I think the original duck question that spawned the recent duck discussion was 'what is a good breed to have', and not that I get a vote, but if I did, it would be Pekin.

LMP, yes, you read that right, my main Cock is a Black Copper Marans, he covers my Marans, Eaaster Eggers, Olive Eggers, and any misfits that come along. I've got some pretty Blue Laced Red Wyandottes but no rooster, so they are in the main coop being covered by the Marans until I grow out a cockerel.
