Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I will give it another week or so and then decide his fate. I have a 2 year old and don't want to worry about him coming after her while free ranging. So far our EE roo is nice. We had a silkie roo in the past that was a sweetheart. One day he went missing while free ranging. We also had a leghorn roo that was wonderful with us but went after this particular hen every chance he got. He cornered her in the nesting box and it looked like a murder scene. Not sure what he didn't like about her but she is a wonderful layer and all he did was eat up food and take up space so he was the one that went. I hate to lie to the kids but maybe I will tell them that Hatcher our roo went for a walk and didn't come back home. It looks like our one polish chick is going to be a roo and I don't want anymore than 2 anyway. Thanks for all the feedback!

Peeps:

I am not the most experienced, but, because I have a girl who my two roos want to hurt, she only free ranges about an hour or so a day under my supervision...if either roo comes near, she's under my feet....I sometime have to back the boys off....over time, if I take a step they retreat....they respect dominance...maybe mine arn't mean...or maybe they know better....

Here's a pic of some of the chicks that hatched this week.
Wingstone, those little Rhodebar boys are from the pair you sold me.

Guess the name should be changed to Mt. Not-so-Healthy Hatchery.

Scary thing is that that's where TSC gets their chicks from here. Which means that is where my Brahmas and Bantams came from...

NOW what do I do? D: should I be worried??

Some get from a hatchery in Michigan...but just use common sense. Wash hands after touching birds, make sure kids wash hands, keep chicks away from your face...& don't lick your birds...lol

Lol! Ok so stop liking the chicks. Got it! XD
I asked at our TSC earlier this spring just because I was curious. They said they get their chicks from Mt. Healthy. I wasn't too thrilled just because their website is quite uninformative and unhelpful. I like to know exactly what I'm ordering. Their website does not make that possible. And now this. Apparently bad gut feeling about the place was right. :C

I'm going to assume that we're safe. We got most of our chicks from TSC but they're almost 8 weeks old now and none of us got sick yet (knock on wood) lol

ETA: there's no licking of chicks in this house lol but the occasional peck on the lips...OUCH!

Wow! I think i just read 20 pages to get caught up with you guys-and now i have a sudden urge to buy anything fluffy with wings, thanks. On another note, i put our 3 week old golden laced hens out for their first "free range", they were excited to say the least (not so much when one of our NHR crowed next to them). Which reminds me- get rid of roosters....

Anyone with semi-aggressive roosters and children- the easiest thing to do is get rid of them. Our first rooster was a Dominique and he was really a great rooster, until he attacked my 3 year old three times. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt- was it because she was his size? Was it because she was wearing a certain color? In the end, he met some buck shot out of the 12 gauge because i couldn't rein in my emotion when he attacked her again. Bottom line (and I'm a newbie!) Don't keep them if they are aggressive of any sort toward kids (seriously, my kid wouldn't go outside for God's sake).

On feed- i feed just a layer pellet (my hens waste a lot of it's anything else) from a local mill here in Manheim, although i'm drawing a blank on the name right now. McCracken i think? And as Wingstone can tell you about the rooster we processed, grapes and mac and cheese is how we roll around here (possibly why we have evidence of a rat in the compost?!).

Congrats to all the new people and the people who have hatched! Now i want quail ... and ducks.... and meat chickens... and new rabbits ..... dang it!!!
