Wow, you guys haven't been as chatty as usual today. I wasn't on all day and I was only a page and a half behind lol.

I know this has been discussed a thousand times but I can't even attempt to go back through and find it. I just started some fermented feed. I was doing it one way but it doesn't seem to be working out so well so I'm staying the continuous ferment type where you just add more feed and water each day after you take it out. All I need to know is, how often to stir it and do you cover it with anything? I have it in one of those big red buckets that someone posted a picture of before. It's well under water level and I've added ACV.

Yes, a fairly quiet day, except for a fox attack!

I'm working late tonight. Lucky I have a job where I can pop over here when it gets boring.

Stir twice a day, and if you cover it, only with a towel/screen to keep bugs/critters out. It needs to breathe to ferment.

Well, time to cut some apron strings... I placed an ad for some of our broody raised chicks tonight... but we have too many and we just had 2 more hens go to broody this week (#10 and #11) so time to send them along.

Snapped a few pics as the youngsters lounged in the woods behind the coop this evening... would love to keep them all to see how they grow up but just not practical! LOL

Tomorrow I am loaning a spare incubator to a family (friends of my sister's). They want their kids to experience hatching eggs. I love doing this sort of educational stuff with kids. My sister posted the offer to borrow an incubator on her facebook page and she said about 10 families have expressed interest so far. I'm quite excited about doing this.

If anyone on here has EE pullets I am interested! I want to go to the auction in Middleburg to get rid of some of my other chickens and I am hoping someone brings some EE pullets so I can try and buy some. Fingers crossed!

Speaking of feed, I am using a non-medicated pheasant and turkey starter crumble (28%) from Southern States

My first question is, do they make a pellet starter of any brand? The ground is covered in food, and I am tired of it being wasted.
Second, if I take the feeder out, will they eat that food off the ground?
And my third question. Why is a meat bird starter so low in protein, when the higher is supposed to be better?

They don't want you to blow there legs out.  That is really high protein!  You FF right?

I haven't been able to catch up and am falling asleep.... But wanted to respond about this

MC, somewhere here on BYC I saw the typical Tractor Supply feeder (plastic with read bottom) set into one of the large black heavy rubber feed bowls. I tried it and it works really well at keeping the feed from being wasted. I think it's the second higher wall (black plastic). I've since been slowly adding these to each of my coops to cut down on the waste. It's saving me a a ton on feed especially with the turkeys whose coop is still not finished and who are still pooping all over my sisters belongings.

Lily hasn't kidded yet, I really thought she would by now.

I start everyone on medicated feed for about 6-8 weeks. I bump the protein up for my Orps at 8 weeks and put everyone else on layer, except the turkeys who are getting 26%.

G'nite peeps

I use the large Rubbermaid buckets, I stir once a day due to work schedule and it has never been a problem...I leave a couple inches in each bucket to keep the ferment going and just add to it.
